Ascot beaten 7-0 by Actonians

Ascot United Women crashed out of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup at their first hurdle, losing 7-0 in the third and final qualifying round stage on Sunday. Having already lost 13-1 in the league cup against the same side – who play at Bedfont Sports – it was set-up for another difficult day for Ascot, but the damage was lighter this time around.

Arguably the visitors could have done with a little more fortune than drawing one of the strongest fellow step-four sides in the competition, but c’est la vie, and they were faced with somehow trying to compete with quality opposition.

The abysmal attendance of 25 at this level and stage of the competition was only bolstered by the travelling support, who comprised half of it.

The round includes teams from steps four to seven, and drawing one of the sides in the lowest tier might have given a chance for Aym’e Melham’s side to advance and gain confidence, but that never happened and they came up against fellow step-four high-fliers Actonians.

And, Ascot found themselves two down inside eight minutes courtesy of Anna Lalani’s 6th minute volley from Abigail Kargbo’s nod-on, and Lalani’s tap-in at the far post two minutes later.

Ascot ‘keeper Emily Evans made a good save one-on-one from Kargbo later-on and to their credit, Ascot went in only 2-0 down at the break.

But the second half was a familiar story as Lalani completed her treble with a tap-in at the far post before Vicky Fronc scored the goal of the game when she lashed a wonderful 56th-minute cross-shot across Evans and into the top left in the 56th minute.

Another tap-in made it five from a corner, Fronc finished a good move from the left from close-range, and Georgia Griffith did exactly the same in the 73rd minute to make it 7-0 and complete the scoring.

As for Ascot, they rarely entered the final third and the only time they got the ball into Actonians’ penalty area was when Evans came forward to send a free kick into it from the half-way line.

Ascot have now lost all nine games played this season, scoring just three times and conceding sixty.
