AIRBORNE ASCOT PRECEDES A GOOD SHOT AT BADSHOT
ASCOT United take to the skies on Saturday for their league match at relegation-threatened Guernsey (2pm). The Yellamen drew the reverse fixture 3-3 having mounted a dramatic fightback from being 3-0 down at the break, and they will be looking for three points on the road to maintain their play-off push. JT’s men start out from Winkfield Road shortly before 6am before taking an early-morning flight out of Gatwick Airport.
The home side had shown signs of a mini-recovery to drag themselves out of the drop zone last month, but three successive defeats and no goals scored – most recently a midweek 7-0 humbling at Farnham Town – have sent them back into the bottom four.
The game is also a poignant day for the hosts for two reasons; Guernsey will play their last-ever-game at Footes Lane before their transition to their new Victoria Park home, and they will also pay tribute to former away-day physio Robin Bishop, who passed away last week. From all at Ascot United, we will join in paying our respects.
The Yellamen’s one win in six also hasn’t done them any favours, but with eight games to go and what looks to be six teams fighting for four play-off spots, it’s a case of getting down to business at the sharp end of the season.
The weekend’ action kicks off on Friday with Hayes & Yeading’s trip to Ashford Town (Middx) – the visitors would move into the play-offs with a win – before Saturday’s programme includes Moneyfields (9th) vs Hartley Wintney (6th); the only game between sides in the top half. Full programme below.
On Sunday, Ascot United Women are also on the road at strugglers Badshot Lea knowing that a win will put them eight points clear with four games remaining. Second-placed Wycombe are not in action and fourth-placed Portchester have a tricky game at home to fifth-placed Woodley, who could all-but-put the hosts out of the title race with a win in Hampshire.
