Girl's Development Centre launch

We caught with Carol Checkley, the Head of Girl’s Football at Ascot United and got her thoughts on our newly introduced Girl’s Development Centre and the success it’s seen since starting up in August.

Is the Development Centre proving popular?

Yes, the girls development centre has got off to a fantastic start and have had a regular attendance. We have over 50 girls registered from age five, all the way up to 16 years old.

What would you say to anyone undecided about joining the session?

If someone is feeling unsure or they’re not confident about coming along – I can honestly say you won’t be disappointed we have a set of lovely coaches who are really supportive, no matter what your ability we are here to help you enjoy football! It’s all about having fun, learning the game and having some laughs along the way!

What have been the highlights so far?

Well it’s definitely not been the fact it seemed to rain every Wednesday or be minus temperatures having said that the girl’s still turned up and when we are battling with the weather the girls still showed how much they wanted to learn and put in the effort.

For me as a coach highlight is when you see the improvement in the girls in the four months this makes me happy and seeing the girls buzzing that they have learned to do a step over or other skills is such a joy!

Any standout moments?

A few of the older girls joined forces with u18s Ascot squad and took part in a friendly game against another club. They lost the first half 2-0 and won second half 2-0, so 2-2 was a very good result considering development girls had never played an 11-a-side match before.

We look forward to getting more of the development girls involved in friendly games between now and end of season.
