Ascot United 1 – 5 Farnham Town
Isthmian League South Central 220325
LEADERS Farnham Town edged closer to the title with a comprehensive 5-1 victory at Ascot United. In front of a season’s-high crowd of 502 at The Racecourse Ground, the visitors were ahead inside three minutes when Darryl Sanders’ sumptuous free kick around the hosts’ wall found the bottom right-hand corner. However, Ascot responded well and George Lock showed enough desire to get on the end of Harry Grant’s delivery from a ninth minute corner to head home (pictured, shooting-stars.co.uk).
Farnham were dangerous every time they pressed forwards and threatened twice in quick succession midway through the half; Sanders side-footing wide before Ascot defender Sean Fraser somehow diverted Adam Liddle’s goal-bound effort over the crossbar.
After the break, Farnham took control and Liddle shrugged off his marker before threading the ball through for Sam Evans to make it 2-1 in the 56th minute. Jordan Gallagher came off the bench for the visitors midway through the half and soon lashed home from a corner to make it 3-1.
Ascot substitute Aiden Payne-James might have set up a grandstand finale only to hit the crossbar after a mazy run, before slicing wide on the volley from Chad Goulter’s cross, and his side would rue those missed chances.
Gallagher side-footed home on the volley three minutes from time to make it 4-1 before Great Evans pounced on a defensive error and rounded home ‘keeper Mark Scott in added time to complete the scoring.
