Big games at Racecourse on Saturday and Sunday
Ascot United return to league action after a two-week break with the visit of in-form Ashford Town (Middx) on Saturday (3pm). The visitors, who have won four of their last sux outings, are now within touching distance of moving out of the relegation zone after picking up twelve points from eighteen.
And, on Sunday, Ascot United Women have the chance to make history as – if they can beat Selsey at home (2pm) – they will be crowned Southern Region Women’s Football League Premier Division champions for the first time in their history. With the news filtering through on Thursday that the SRWFL committee have awarded three points to The Yellawomen following Winchester’s inability to fulfil a fixture almost two months ago, the scene is now set for Andy Cox’s side in front of their own supporters.
There will be free ‘lite’ printed programmes on the gate for both fixtures.
But it all begins with the visit of Ashford as the race for the play-offs intensifies. Ascot are still in the fifth and final berth with a two-point cushion over Leatherhead in sixth, and depending on where you draw the line, there are just nine points separating third and tenth.
Saturday’s fixtures will see points dropped by some of the contenders as they include Hartley Wintney (10th) v Hanworth Villa (4th) and Uxbridge (2nd) v Leatherhead (6th). Elsewhere, Kingstonian (3rd) entertain Rayners Lane (11th) and Hayes & Yeading (7th) welcome champions Farnham; Ascot hoping the champagne has worn off for them and they continue their push to break the 100-point barrier.
Looking ahead, The Yellamen’s abandoned fixture at Hanworth Villa last weekend has now been rescheduled for Tuesday April 15th.
And, with the weather seemingly set-fair all weekend, what better way to round it off by supporting the Yellawomen on Sunday. Unbeaten at home in the league for over three years and facing a Selsey side who are yet to win a league game this season, maybe – just maybe – this is the time that Andy Cox’s side realize their dream after finishing runners-up in each of the past two seasons. A win would give them an unassailable advantage at the top and a draw would mean that 2nd-placed Wycombe would need to win both their league games to draw level of points, but the home side will undoubtedly be looking for three points to get the job done.
