Frankfurt Tour 2025
TSV Koenigstein and Ascot United put on a veritable feast of footballing entertainment on 16 May, scoring 11 goals between them in what became a real thriller of a contest. Ascot started slowly and the hosts subsequently had much the better of the first half. As the game wore on the Yellasnonetheless warmed to their task and by the end they were hurling the proverbial kitchen sink at Koengstein. The first game of the 2025 Frankfurt tour started at a rather leisurely pace. Both sides shadow-boxed their way through the first few minutes, sizing each other up and trying to work each other out. But, soon enough the first blows were landed; Koenigstein broke nicely and took the lead. Twinkle-toed Adam Fennell responded for the visitors, but it wasn’t long before Rob Stockford was again picking the ball out of his net. Chris Ferdinand continued his fine goal-scoring season by notching another, but, again, Koenigsten were sharp in front of goal and subsequently pushed on ahead. The goals were flying in and the game was warming up nicely.
Gaffer Jad Sidhu – overseeing the changes from the sidelines – decided a touch of midfield serenity was needed. Carl Withers came on and immediately started spreading the ball about impressively. He worked nicely with Germany-based Rob Burton, although that partnership was ended prematurely when Burton picked up an injury and had to hobble off. Mind you, he hobbled off immediately after pinging a humdinger of a shot into the onion bag. A decent way to go.
By now all the momentum was with Ascot. Adam Moroney and Ian Davies were causing chaos up top, Adam Abuswederwas scurrying his way through the midfield and messrs Lewis and Markarian were running at a now petrified home defence.
Still, Ascot needed three goals. And time was ticking. The first goal came quickly enough Tony Everest lurkingimpressively in the six yard box to score what was arguably the goal of the game. Ian Davies then made it 6-5 and with 25 minutes left it looked all the world like Ascot might steamroller Koenigsten. Ever more glaring opportunities were hit over, wide, at the woodwork or were saved by an ever more inspired home ‘keeper. Ascot just could not score, so 6-5 it did – somehow – end.
Post-match Koenigsten provided a brilliant BBQ plus crates of decent German beer. Brilliant hosting on their part, fair play. All in then, a magnificent way to start the 2025 tour. On to Darmstadt on Saturday…
