Report

Match report from 1s yesterday. Thanks to Adam Moroney for taking the team 🙌🙌

On a windy, rock hard bobbly pitch, the Ascot United squad appeared to arrive in stages. With Tommo preparing for the SV’s evening game, Adam Moroney took charge. Moroney showed some inexperience with instructions to start with 10, leaving 4 on the bench. Manu managed to put himself in the lineup just in time for kick off.

Even though the conditions may have been more suited to launching the ball long, Ascot avoided the temptation to do so and decided to play rather than go long. It wasn’t long before Ascot took the lead through some good play, and quick passing. Ian Davies threading through for Adam Fennell who cooly slotted home inside 2 minutes. One goal quickly led to another, Mano getting wide and crossing decisively for Ian Davies to score a rare diving header. 2-0 Ascot.

With the momentum of the game thoroughly in Ascot’s hands, Adam Fennell let fly with a top corner strike, certainly a goal of the season contender. As Ascot took control of the game and pushing for more, Latimer Road caught Ascot on the break. 3-1. Ascot realised they needed to remain focused on the job in hand. Say no more..a Fennell corner picked out the head of Tim Standing who provided a thunderbolt of a header, straight into the top corner.. Lightning does strike twice, after the break, a Tanfield corner was again met by the head of Standing.

Another goal of the season contender was next with Fennell putting a ball through to Davies who looped the ball first time from 30 yards over the keeper’s head. 6-1. Ascot continued to keep the ball down and played some good stuff. This resulted in Glenn Johnson playing a through ball out wide for Davies who finished from an acute angle to give him his perfect hatrick. In a moment of madness Wooz conceded a foul throw, analysis is still ongoing into how he actually threw the ball. A rare glimpse into the ex-pro’s limited weaknesses…

7-1 became 7-2 as Ascot began to relax a little too much, however this was quickly put right with the quick pass from Dan Wing to Mano who again slotted well into the bottom corner. Finally Fennell grabbed his hatrick from 6 yards. A cutback from James Niknejad handed the finish on a plate. Niknejad almost grabbed one himself, but for the scoop over his own head from 2 yards and wide, almost magical. Latimer continued to try to make a game of it, and to their credit and nice finish concluded the game at 9-3. “ I’m never doing this again”, “I thought this was easy” and “where’s Tommo?” Were just a few of the comments from the mercurial Adam Moroney. Next up, Cup Final
