Report

Another excellent performance and result from the 1s today, they keep their hopes of defending the cup win of last season alive as they secured a semi-final slot at the expense of a dogged Claygate side.
This was never going to be an easy game; Claygate have recruited well this season and both previous games against them were a difficult challenge. But right now, Ascot are in the vein of form that was expected at the start of the season – they themselves have developed a backbone and have good players a plenty, so are a tough act to beat when the attitude and commitment are at their highest.
A fairly even start saw chances at both ends but as the half progressed, Ascot began to get the upper hand. This resulted in a narrow lead at half time, after Moroney had converted from the spot on the half hour mark.
Better quality with the final ball and runners from deep were the words at the break and Ascot executed superbly, Lewis beating the offside trap to double the lead from a Withers’ through ball.
A high energy game was always going to need all 16, and all 5 subs (Birkett, Bar (making his debut for the 1s), Bennett, Wing and Fennell) can be proud of their contribution today. They brought refreshed energy, a combative edge and more goals, with Bennett converting the penalty he himself had won, and Fennell waltzing past 4 and slotting home making sure of the win.
An excellent result and a clean sheet, to boot. Well done all!
