Report

Cafu and Pirlo

Great to welcome our ex-keeper Steve Reilly and his Hersham team back to the Racecourse ground. A comfortable win in the end but a hard fought game for 70 minutes with the final score reflecting the hard pre-season work put in by the Ascot players.

A confident start and decent ball retention by Ascot with Hersham well organised. After 10mins Dave P slid the ball into Ben who got past his marker and pulled it back for Garyth whose shot was really well blocked. A couple of minutes later, Hersham had a good looking break and JK put a stop to it, looked up and found Toby who saw Leon’s run from deep. A clip over the keeper and Leon had opened the scoring. Jad was playing really well at right back with a hint of the Cafu’s about him and after a great break had his shot tipped wide by Steve. The two former team mates shared glances. A patient move on 35 minutes and gaps were opening up. Sam got away down the left, laid in a lovely first time ball to Garyth whose shot was parried by the keeper. Dave S showed real desire to get in front of the defender to crash it home 2-0.

A sloppy piece of defending gave Hersham some energy as their striker volleyed in from about 6 yards. After 39 minutes it was 3-1 and as Mick put it ‘Ben lost it, got it back, walked round 3 people and tapped it in’

Ascot started strongly in the second half but it was Hersham who scored first with a wonderful freekick into the top corner from about 20 yards on 51mins. Ascot responded. JK played in a lovely ball to Garyth who was patient and slid a beautiful ball behind the full back with Abbas racing onto it. A great drilled ball was smashed into the roof of the net by Ben steaming in at the far post. 4-2 after 55m. A great goal and Abbas was proving to be a real threat and giving us excellent width high up the pitch and Ascot began to stretch Hersham.

Ascot were really dominating now and JK was having another great game quickly sniffing out any Hersham threat and getting Ascot playing again quickly. On 60 minutes we saw what was going to happen for the last half hour. Mick started a really quick move with a couple of one touch passes, Toby and Bjorn got involved and then Abbas slid in a wonderful ball to Ben who was brought down as he was about to race clear. Hersham looked to press high. Toby, Leon and then Ben worked a nice move and Rich made a great run from deep and it was 5-2. Rich was finding acres of space in the hole and started to create real problems for a tiring Hersham side. He took a great ball on the half turn to play in Ben who committed the defenders and slipped to Sam who finished neatly.

Three more goals in the last 3 minutes gave the scoreline an unfair look. Sam breaking and finishing well, JK capped a great performance becoming Pirlo for last two goals. A wonderful defence splitting pass to Rich and then a lovely volleyed 1-2 with Bjorn and then drilled into Ben for great goal.

A good close game until Hersham tired and Ascot took advantage of their hard pre-season work. Nice to see Bjorn make his debut.
