Report

A dominant performance

Tommo’s warm up (above), FNF Field of Dreams (below)

A crisp winter evening saw Ascot put Old Meads to the sword in their first league game since the middle of November. It was a dominant performance without the opposition getting a single shot away.

The first goal came after 3 minutes and could’ve come a little earlier if it wasn’t for an excellent save by the Meads keeper from Sam’s shot. A far post corner was headed back across the goal by Toby and Ben finished with a crisp volley. In the 8th minute Rocket played an excellent firm ball through the lines into Ben’s feet. Ben drew the foul from the defender and whilst the defence dithered getting organised, Rob didn’t and curled the ball into the far corner much to the crowd’s amusement but the displeasure of the Old Meads defenders. Quick thinking.

Ascot were still dominating possession without creating further chances but the switching of play and continual movement was going to have an effect on the oppositions fitness later in the game. On 25 minutes, a lovely two touch move put Toby in the clear wide left. He clipped in a great ball and Sam looked to have scored before the keeper got down low and pushed the ball round the post. Great save. From the resulting corner Ben chested the ball down at the far post and tapped it in for 3-0 (Just couldn’t do it JGav)Two more goals followed as Ascot got back to doing the basics really well. Wooz advanced with the ball, clipped it into Sam, chest trap, touch and finish for 4-0. A lovely one touch move down the left and Rob was able to break free and square for a Ben tap in. This came after a couple of ‘tap wides’ and was well received by all.

5-0 at half time with JK, Wooz and Rocket not allowing Old Meads a single chance. A few changes at the break. Matt, Andy, Doug and Lunny all coming on.

Old Meads put up an excellent effort but there excursions in the first half were now having an impact. They fought really well but Ascot just had the little extra quality to get behind and create chances. 47 minutes and another one touch move got Rob away wide right. He picked out Sam and Toby making runs at the far post. Sam rose like Nat Lofthouse and smashed his header into the back of the net. A few minutes later and Toby intercepts a defensive clearance and lays the ball to Sam. He turns the defender inside out and squares it for the on rushing Doug to finish. Toby got the next, ghosting in at the far post to finish yet another assist from Rob. The Standing brothers combined for the next goal with Ben setting up Tim for a tap in.

Number 10 was a fittingly good goal. Rocket turned his defender and sprinted away from him then drilled the ball across the face of the goal for Ben to finish and claim his 4th goal of the game.

Rocket himself finished a good move with a drilled shot under the keeper after being assisted by Lunny with a great turn and set.

It is nice to be back underway with league and cup games coming thick and fast.
