Report
In a return to action following a 2 month break, Ascot Vets’ 1st XI played the spirited Woodley in their first preseason fixture.
The prematch brief had been to keep the ball and protect the keeper (the less than proficient Tomlinson deputising for the absent Lyons and Beard) – the score really did not matter.
Ascot committed to the task superbly; possession a plenty, blocked shots and, at the other end, lots of chances created. It was a matter of minutes before the lead was established and Ascot kicked on, totally dominating the opening 30 minutes.
The prearranged plan was 4 changes on 30 minutes – a very difficult time to join a game – and understandably Ascot’s rhythm was slightly adversely affected, with Woodley seizing their chance to reduce the arrears. 4-1 at half time.
The opening of the second half saw much more fight from Woodley but Ascot had returned to the groove of the opening 30 minutes and extended their lead.
Woodley had some chances and did grab a second, but Ascot always responded with goals of their own.
8-2 it ended.
A strong opening performance from the 1st XI but there will be tougher tests to come.
Goals: Davies 3, Papali 2, Bennett 2, Sykes 1.
Next up, Hartley Witney on Friday 14th August.
