Report
Were Ascot worthy winners? Certainly – they played with an energy and freedom that was too much for KPR to handle.
Did KPR throw in the towel? Absolutely not! They kept Ascot honest for the full 90 minutes and were unlucky to only register the one goal themselves.
Could Ascot have scored more? Indeed they could, but tonight they were generally clinical in front of goal, both in terms of finishing and in recognising when a teammate was better placed to score.
A good night’s work from the 1s, with good minutes in the tank for everyone involved. An early goal had been requested prematch, and Papali responded after 2 minutes, netting from a Sykes’ corner. By 11 minutes, Papili had wrapped up the hattrick, his second following good play from Ferdinand and Davies and his third provided by Moroney. Ascot were cruising.
Sensing blood, the 1s pressed high and probed hard and raced into an 8-1 lead by half time. Goals came from Tanfield, assisted by Sykes, Papali again from a Davies’ assist, Moroney from the spot following a foul on Davies, Davies himself following excellent play from Ferdinand to Tanfield and Papali for his 5th from another Davies’ assist. KPR did also notch; Johnson literally mugged by 3 KPR assailants just outside the box, only for the ref to wave play on for their forward to score past the otherwise impeccable Lyons.
The second half saw much of the same, despite numerous changes for the home team. KPR stuck at it but Ascot always looked like they were a moment away from the next goal. In the end, 4 more followed – Davies from a parried Bennett shot, Moroney from a Johnson cross, Moroney again from chasing a lost cause that the GK proceeded to drop and finally Bennett from an excellent pass from Everest leading to a Moroney cross.
12-1 it ended and Ascot can be pleased with their night’s work. Some excellent, well thought through play that made light work of dogged resistance from KPR. Well done, boys!
Next up the final league game of the season, away to Latimer Rd.
