Minutes in the legs and good habits
Two back to back 30 minute games against Windlesham and Holyport kick started the Vets 1st XI pre-season. Great to see Doug Buchannan back on the pitch after over a year out and yes of course he scored with a trademark late run into the box and a side foot finish. We had three players on debut. From the Vets Academy set up, we enjoyed watching Ryan Joseph for the first time and Rob Stockford showed agility and bravery under fire for an impressive opening. Dwaine Bryan showed he had plenty to offer up top playing alongside Adam.
It wasn’t an evening for focusing on scores but I think Ascot narrowly beat a entertaining Windlesham team 2-1 and drew 1-1 with a good Holyport side.
Matt Newall was excellent at the centre of the defence. His organisation and distribution outstanding over both games. Last years unanimous player’s player (and managers player), Adam Moroney, opened his account with a well taken goal. Toby cut in off the right to clip a nice finish into the far corner and we have already mentioned Doug’s goalscoring return. Good to see Lee Perry in goal again and Lunny continuing to develop in a different role. Tanners was a real threat all game and Stu Birkett covered most of the plastic. Chris came on to give Doug a rest and shored up the midfield.
Some good habits out there and a few other things to sharpen up but that is the purpose of these games so an enjoyable and successful start to pre-season 2023/24.
Bravery in possession is a good habit
