Half-centurion Huntley on target in landmark appearance
Ascot United Women eased to a 4-0 victory in the National League Cup group phase at Bournemouth Sports on Sunday. The Yellawomen, who had scored just once in their previous four outings, were dominant on the south coast in scoring a quadruple, with defender Erin Huntley amongst the scorers on her 50th appearance for the club.
After a good start, Jacey Lane – who impressed off the bench a week earlier – slide home the opener in the 26th minute.
League rivals ‘Sports twice hit the woodwork after that, but after Andy Cox had made three changes at the break one of them – Molly Gladwell – teed up Mia Delaney to head home four minutes after the restart.
Huntley put the game out of reach in the 65th minute before Kate Fox scored another – described as “[Marco] Van-Basten like” – to ice the cake two minutes later.
The attendance at Fawcett’s Field Sports Ground was 95, a smattering of them going home happy.
Having drawn their opening league cup group clash with Moneyfields in their four-team group Cox’s team are now on four points. Tier-three Bournemouth AFC will now come to the Racecourse in three weeks’ time – The Cherries having won their opening two games – meaning a shock victory for Ascot in the final group match would see them top the table and advance outright.
Ascot are at home next weekend in the league against Portishead.
