Wandsworth Vets 2 – 3 Ascot Utd Vets 2 XI

 

Ascot Utd V2’s made the trip to Wandsworth with a committed but compact squad of 13, featuring two ever-reliable “super vets,” a few carefully managed hamstrings, and the very welcome return of Alex M after five months out. On a baking hot day and a pitch best described as concrete, the pre-match mood was lightened by JK’s confident declaration that it was “a bowler’s wicket” – a theory slightly tested when his warm-up googly didn’t quite behave…!

 

Undeterred, Ascot lined up in an ambitious 3-5-2, placing real emphasis on the wing-backs to provide energy and width – and they delivered in spades. Martin Kay and Jon Norris, both more accustomed to super vets football, were outstanding. Martin’s tireless running and positional intelligence controlled his flank in the first half, while Jon’s quality delivery consistently asked questions of the opposition.

 

The game itself began scrappily, with the heat and hard surface making rhythm difficult. Ascot gradually settled though, with the back three looking solid – JK dominant in the air, Daz composed in possession, and Jon Hicks bringing strength and determination. It was one of those unfortunate moments, however, that saw Hicks open the scoring at the wrong end. A dangerous cross bobbled awkwardly, and under pressure, his attempted clearance looped into the net.

 

At 1–0 down, there could have been frustration, but Ascot’s response was excellent. Raph was immense in midfield, combining relentless energy with plenty of vocal encouragement (and the occasional tennis-style exclamation), much to the amusement of his partner Dando. The equaliser soon followed, with James Niknejad showing great composure. After neat interplay involving the ever elegant Izzy and the hardworking classy JB, James kept his cool – despite initially looking like the chance had gone – and slotted confidently into the corner.

 

The remainder of the half was full of effort and commitment, including a slightly chaotic but entertaining moment when Eric raced out, caught the ball at least 5 yards outside his area, and somehow managed to avoid any punishment – despite strong appeals and Tredders doing his best to assist the referee from the sideline!

 

Half-time brought a couple of changes, with Tredders replacing Martin and Alex M making his long-awaited return for Izzy. Both Martin and Izzy had put in excellent first-half performances, and it was great to see fresh legs – especially Alex – back out on the pitch. Dando’s team talk was simple: “more of the same,” and the team responded perfectly.

 

Early in the second half, Eric turned provider with a superb long kick that sent Niknejad through. James finished brilliantly to make it 2–1 and secure his first brace for the club – a well-deserved reward for his sharp attacking play. Wandsworth responded with an equaliser of their own, following a neat passing move, leaving Eric with little chance. It was a disappointing goal to concede – a few missed tackles and too much space afforded to both winger and striker meant we were back to level pegging.

 

Eric, however, was having an excellent game and produced arguably the moment of the match shortly after. With the score at 2–2, he sprang like a salmon to tip a deflected JK thunderbolt onto the bar with one hand – a top-class save that kept Ascot firmly in it.

 

With 10 minutes remaining, the decisive moment arrived. Jon Norris, once again influential from left wing-back, delivered a beautifully weighted ball over the top. Alex M, marking his return, timed his run perfectly and finished with confidence to make it 3–2. The smile that followed said everything – a brilliant moment that not only captured the joy football can bring, but also summed up Alex’s journey back and the team’s spirit on the day.

 

Ascot managed the closing stages with maturity. Raph came close to capping his outstanding performance with a goal, striking the post, while Tredders produced a moment of real quality – a delightful over-the-shoulder volley that had shades of prime Ronaldinho.

 

In the end, it was a thoroughly deserved victory. A new formation that worked well, a committed group who supported each other throughout, and a performance full of effort, resilience, and quality when it mattered most. Three points, a triumphant return, and the added bonus of well-earned pizza and beer afterwards – a very enjoyable Saturday afternoon all round!
