JERSEY BULLDOZE ASCOT

Yellamen lose cross-Channel away day 4-2

Jersey Bulls beat Ascot United 4-2 on Saturday to end the visitors’ mini-resurgence and leave them still searching for their first away win of the season. All of the damage was done in a crazy opening quarter of the game which saw The Bulls lead 3-1 having initially been pegged back, and from that point Gavin Smith’s side were always chasing the game on The Channel Island.

Yellamen easily cut open

The visitors’ long trip started well as they had the better of the opening five minutes, but that led straight into Jersey taking the lead when talismanic striker Lorne Bickley outmuscled Rudi Pache from a long-ball, before cutting onto his right and shooting low across Kie Plumley and into the bottom right.

Ascot responded quickly when the impressive Cam Rohart-Brown played a neat one-two and released Fope Deru, who repeated Bickley’s trick by checking onto his right and firing low into the right hand corner to make it 1-1.

But Bickley smashed home at the neat post to restore The Bulls’ advantage in the 14th minute and Jack Lumsden’s looping header made it 3-1 before a quarter of the game had been played.

Plumley denied Casey Nixon from scoring number four a minute later although Joe Bassey might have cut the deficit at the other end only to see his shot deflect over.

In the second half, Toby Ritzema drove into the box and fired a left-footed effort across Plumley and into the net for 4-1, and Bickley should have made it five and completed his hat-trick in the 66th minute only to fire at Plumley when unmarked before blazing the rebound over.

Despite being on the back-foot for long spells, Ascot gave themselves hope with twelve minutes remaining courtesy of substitute Chukz Uzor. In a well-worked move, Kai Allsopp linked up with Jaye Long, Long flicked the ball out to Ricco Bullard-Jeffrey on the right, and he whipped a cross in for Uzor, who hooked home on the volley having only been on the pitch eight minutes.

The visitors then looked the better side pushing forwards for another goal that might have made it interesting, but the damage was done long before.

It still took a late double-save from Plumley to keep the margin of defeat at 4-2.
