Jamrock Supervets v Ascot United Supervets

Ascot United’s second rendez-vous with Jamrock within 24 hours produced the same result (a win for the Yellas) but a very different contest.

The Friday affair between the V2s and Jamrock Steppa was won comfortably by Ascot United, but Steppa kept playing and showed decent resilience. In the game between the Supervets’ sides on Saturday Ascot raced into a five goal lead by half-time, whilst Jamrock’s discipline went shooting through the floor.

On the plus side, Ascot’s patched up squad had a plan and stuck to it. Messrs Tomlinson, Purdue and Read put their foot on the ball, Martin Kay and John Gregory offered width from the fall-back berths. Chris Ferdinand and Dave Thompson battled gamely up top while Ed Dubois and the ever-young Dave Porter were solid at the back.

It took 15 minutes for the first goal to come – Chris Ferdinand finished with some aplomb – but by that point the Ascot chances were coming freely. Mike Tomlinson was peppering shots in (one of which nestled nicely in the bottom corner of the net) and a decent cross was thumped into his own net by a Jamrock defender. Chris Ferdinand doubled his money as a scrambling ‘keeper couldn’t quite keep a shot from the edge of the box out, whilst Dan Hough neatly chipped the ‘keeper to finish the first half scoring.

Yet, right from the start the game had progressed oddly. A number of Jamrock players were late arriving (for their home fixture, of course) and that meant a delayed start. Home players were soon arguing with each other and indeed goading the opposition.

As the game moved into the second half Ascot effectively managed things and basically waited for the end. Home levels of grumpiness and petulance continued to rise and everyone in a Yella shirt was thankful when the referee finally blew his final whistle. That didn’t stop one Jamrock player from approaching the Ascot players in the dressing room to announce he’d fight any of them. All in a game where 22 old men are kicking a bag of wind about. Far from ideal on so many levels……

Be that as it may, Ascot United are now done with playing Jamrock in 2025-26. We move on.
