ASCOT SUFFER LATE HENDON HEARTBREAK
Yellas lose 2-1 to 97th minute strike
Hendon came from a goal down to beat Ascot United with the last action of the game on Saturday. Having led early-on, Ascot looked like they might escape with a draw after Hendon battered them with wave after wave of attack in the second half, only to see their hopes dashed by The Dons’ late-late show.
Ascot look to take home form on their travels
Whilst Ascot’s recent form had been much-improved and had lifted them up to a more-comfortable mid-table position, their away haul was limited to a solitary win in seven games exactly three months earlier; just four goals scored in the process.
Hendon, meanwhile, came into the game two points above the drop and four below Ascot. It looked like a tight game on paper, but Ascot were one of only three sides in the entire four-division Isthmian League who hadn’t drawn a league game so far this season.
Luis Le Paih missed out again whilst recovering from a broken nose, as did Troy Murray with illness; Sean Fraser and Rudi Pache kept their place in central defence following last weekend’s win.
Yellas strike early and withstand pressure
In a rapid start to the game, the visitors took just five minutes to take the lead when Jaheim Kamara escaped down the right wing and cut an intelligent ball back to the far post for Cameron Rohart-Brown, who crashed a thunderous effort across home ‘keeper Josh Strizovic and into the top right-hand corner.
The Dons were largely disappointing but almost levelled when Jordan Grey and Brad Smith combined for Harry Brant, whose shot faded just wide of the right hand post with Kie Plumley scrambling.
But Ascot top scorer Lucias Vine almost fashioned a second for his side in the 21st minute, breaking down the left and opening his body for a right footed shot from an improbably tight angle that curled around Strizovic bust just missed the right-hand post.
In the move of the half, Rohart-Brown and Babs Dehghani combined for the latter to pick out Ibby Sankoh on the right, although his decent outswinging cross was headed well wide by Fope Deru in a chance that should have at least been on target.
But Hendon finished strongly and after Rudi Pache’s heavy touch had gifted the hosts possession in the 40th minute, Sam Shaban, Niko Muir and Brant all took comical air-shots at the ball in quick succession when at least one of them should have tucked it away.
Captain Dave Diedhiou then somehow failed to connect with Muir’s cross into the six-yard box – albeit at full stretch – before his fellow centre back Victor Ferrini thumped an outrageous drive off the middle face of Plumley’s crossbar from fully thirty yards in the first of two added minutes at the end of the half.
The half-time whistle couldn’t come soon enough for the visitors, who escaped with their lead as the sides changed ends.
One-sided second half sees Ascot eventually crack
Kicking down the slope, Hendon mounted wave upon wave of attack and forced a plethora of corners, although it was an ugly scramble that led to Diedhiou prodding home a 54th minute leveller.
Shaban then missed a sitter with the goal at his mercy after Plumley could only parry an earlier shot in the 63rd minute as the pressure mounted, although with time ticking away the visitors finally mounted an attack and Pache grazed the top of the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Substitute Florian Ada then stabbed another glorious chance wide of the post for Hendon and Plumley beat away fellow replacement Shaun Lucien’s volley from a right angle away in the 93rd minute.
Wit six added minutes scheduled, Andrio Brandao’s well-disguised effort bounced just wide in the fifth of them as Ascot almost nicked an unlikely win, but in the seventh added minute his side conceded a reckless foul, and when the free kick came in, Diedhiou got on the end of it to head past Plumley and sent the home fans into delirium.
