Report:
Ascot V2’s heralded in 2022 with an excellent away win to Claygate Royals Hounds on a rain-soaked pitch which quickly turned into a quagmire.
Ascot V2’s started quickly and were ahead in 8 mins – a driving run from an industrious Benny Spence who excavated his way through the midfield slurry to slide the ball inside the right back to the on rushing Jezza who’s sweetly struck right foot shot from just inside the box nestled under the cross bar, 0-1. V2’s second came after a driving run into the box from Leon forcing a handball. Stu stepped up and calmly slotted home, 0-2. Stu hit a ‘worldy’ from just inside the box which swerved viciously to the keeper right to bring the score to 0-3within 30 mins. V2’s got caught in midfield and Claygate drove forward and slid the ball under Rich to bring the score to 1-3 on 35 mins. V2’s replied with an excellent back post header from Stu to Phil who volleyed low and hard under the keeper to bring the score to 1-4 on HT.
Second half and V2’s made the most of the slope and worsening conditions in persistent rain. V2’s kept the ball in the opposition half. DP barely misplaced a pass while the defence marshalled by Ed with sterling support from Jamie, Jad and Darren annulled any Claygate attacks. Wide players Leon and Martin gave plenty of options going forward. V2’s went ahead quickly, this time the ball pinged wide to JGavwho whilst attempting to whip a cross to the ever ‘sniffing’
Carl, saw the ball drift into a vacant net, 1-5. JGav’s second was a peach. After some great passing on the mud slick, the ball arrived at JGav’s feet who shifted the ball quickly to his right foot to shoot over the keeper, 1-6. V2’s were then denied a 7th. Phil unleashed a shot from 20 yds which hit the bar. Great follow up from Carl saw him head low into the net only for the keeper to angle the ball high into the net and the ball to bounce back into play. Both keeper and CB admitted the ball was well over the line but the goal was disallowed. V2’s 7thcame from a Leon front post corner aimed at Martin which pinged off a Claygate defender and in, 1-7. Super performance from everybody and a well-deserved win
