Ascot United’s Supervets made it two league wins from two as they brushed aside Cheam Sports by eight goals to one on 28 September. Chris Ferdinand was the (perhaps unexpected) star turn in front of goal, helping himself to an impressive hat-trick. Mike Hynes and Dave Thompson bagged a brace apiece as the Yellas ultimately cruised to what was a convincing win.

 

“Received wisdom has it that Les Ferdinand is the best centre-forward in the Ferdinand clan” mused gaffer Stu Flurry to the world’s media in his post-game press conference. “I think that after today that assessment is going to need to be revisited. When Chris (Ferdinand) enters beast mode, he’s pretty damn difficult to stop”. The Cheam defence is pretty certain to agree.

 

Ascot were arguably the better side in the half hour before Ferdinand entered the fray, but when he came and on joined forces with first Dave Thompson and then Paul Hamblin Ascot firmly took control of affairs.

 

The strikers were, however, very much helped by a solid performance from everyone behind them. Eryk Nawala, a late call up for the bed-ridden Rob Stockford, was as solid as ever in nets, which Nigel Gatehouse and Dave Freer stood up well to something of an early aerial bombardment. Micky Parker and Martin Kay defended solidly and indeed got forward when they could.

 

Indeed, it was Parker who was central in Ascot taking the lead. Nigel Gatehouse played a ball out to the left back. Parker advanced nicely before playing in Mike Hynes. Hynes flicked ball around the advancing centre half before smashing it into the net. 1-0 then became 2-0 when Thompson pounced on a ball from Kay across the box; cue a swivel and a ball rocketing into the top corner.

 

The first half goalscoring ended with more swivelling, only this time it was Chris Ferdinand’s hips that were in the middle of the action. Next stop Strictly for Ferdinand, who jinked impressively round the keeper and made it 3-0. Not even the Supervets’ first ever sin bin episode – Dave Thompson being the man concerned – could deflect from the fact that it was a pretty solid 45 minutes for the men from Berkshire.

 

If the first half was ‘solid’ then the second half was moved up into the ‘impressive’ category. Mike Tomlinson put in the miles in the middle and he, alongside debutant Chris Purdue, proceeded to take complete control of affairs. With Abbas Hussain causing all sorts of trouble down the left the goals soon started reining in.

 

Ferdinand doubled his tally after chasing down what looked like a lost cause and forcing the keeper to make a mistake. Mike Hynes doubled his tally with a(nother) elegant finish before Dan Hough then chipped one over the keeper to make it six.

 

Gaffer Flurry promptly rang the changes, and whilst the Yellasbecame a little less fluent on account of that, that didn’t stop them adding a couple more to their tally. The Cheam keeper – who otherwise had an impressive game – won’t be watching the seventh goal back again any time soon; he completely missed a relatively tame Dave Thompson effort that rolled into the bottom corner.

 

That then left Ferdinand, now playing in the centre of the park (sort of) to round things off following a pull back from a break down the right. Cool as a cucumber he slotted in from the edge of the box and that, as they say, was that.

 

“That’s two wins from two and worth noting that co-gaffer Dave Porter hasn’t been present for neither” noted Stu Flurry afterwards. “Maybe there’s a case for the club sending him off on holiday every other week? Just getting that out there…..

 

The Supervets are not in action next weekend, there next encounter will be on Friday 11 October when they entertain Stonehouse.
