ASCOT SLUMP TO BINFIELD DEFEAT

 

Miserable affair ends in 3-1 defeat

 

Ascot United slumped to a 3-1 defeat at neighbours Binfield on Wednesday evening. In a turgid affair in front of a sparse crowd, three penalties – including two for the home side – summed up a miserable evening.

 

Josh hits ton as youngsters called up

Captain Josh Edwards made his 100^th appearance for Ascot – 27 other players have reached that milestone in the ‘modern era’ – but there was also interest in the bench, where two of David Burton’s budding Under 18’s were named. This, in itself, was quite an achievement; last season was about rebuilding and it had been almost two years since the last occasion when Luke Phillips came on as a substitute against Uxbridge.

 

Both sides had traded wins in prior league and league cup encounters this season, but The Moles were more in need of points at the wrong end of the table. A mid-afternoon pitch inspection had been passed although the sparse crowd belied the derby status; Chelsea versus Arsenal would seemingly however outdo The Forest Road Derby to those in-and-around the B3034.

 

Shocking first half

In a dismal first half, Amari Fashanu got the final touch to Binfield’s opener in the fifth minute after former Ascot player Kickie Dzimba was involved, and it was 2-0 in the 18^th minute when ‘keeper Mark Scott was hesitant off his line to thwart Nathaneal Boakye. Scott’s outstretched leg sent him tumbling, penalty the result, and Fashanu tucked it into the bottom right.

 

Ascot huffed and puffed with Khalid Simmo’s two shots easily saved by Coleridge Fubler, but they were given hope at the interval when Kai Allsopp unpicked the hosts’ defence, Lucias Vine was fouled, and he tucked home the resultant spot kick; 39 minutes played.

 

Home manager Ross Weatherstone provided the main entertainment with typically Thesaurus-laden instructions from the touchline, but it worked for the hosts.

In eerie second half where the players and fans looked as if they would simply rather be elsewhere, Simmo’s brilliant block on Boakye denied the home side what looked a certain third, before Dzimba stabbed home at the near post from Fashanu’s left-wing cross.

 

Boakye’s 77^th minute spot kick – awarded after another ‘he’s going nowhere’ tackle – settled the affair, before captain Dan Lewis’s rasping drive clipped the top of the crossbar later on.

 

Ascot offered nothing in the second half, and Binfield’s quest for another great escape is on. The travelling fans also made their own great escape – quickly – mercifully only back down the road.

 

Julien Malta-Bey and Milo Stuart came off the bench with ten-or-so to play for their first taste of senior football action, but despite acquitting themselves well it was a game for all to forget in yellow and blue.
