ASCOT AND MONEYFIELDS PLAY OUT ENTERTAINING DRAW
‘Keepers on top as league cup group spoils shared
Goalkeepers Chloe Donellan and Mia King stole the show as Ascot United and Moneyfields drew 0-0 in their opening National League Cup group stage match. In a high-quality affair, both sides had their chances, but it was the respective stoppers who produced big moments to secure what was ultimately a fair result.
Excellent first half somehow ends goalless
The early stages of the encounter were all about The Moneys who dominated proceedings, and for a while it looked as if it was only a matter of time before they would score; Ascot pinned in their own half.
Daisy Beard’s fierce first-time drive was superbly palmed over by Donnellan, before Keira Heslam curled a free kick onto the outside of the outside post after Teirney Scott had been fouled as the visitors twice went close.
But after working their way into the game, Ascot’ Molly Gladwell curled a shot just over in the 20th minute before Poppy Dearlove’s speculative effort sailed just wide in the 32nd minute with visiting ‘keeper King stranded.
Heslam then stabbed just wide at the far post for Moneyfields, but Ascot finished strongly and after Dearlove’s incredible first-time effort from long-range clattered the crossbar two minutes before the interval, King stood up well to deny Gladwell when clean through in first half injury time.
However, a thoroughly entertaining half somehow finished goalless, leaving the watching midweek crowd of around 80 in anticipation of more of the same after the break.
Chances at a premium after interval as King reigns supreme
The second half was a full-blooded affair albeit short on clear-cut chances – fully twenty minutes passed before Donellan produced another intervention to deny substitute Rozilia Sitanz with a diving save – before watching in the afters as Sitanz recovered to cross for Scott, who headed wide.
But the moment of the half came in the 82nd minute as both sides traded chances. Ascot’s Bella Cox won possession for her side on the left, played a neat one-two with Kate Fox, and then struck a low cross-shot across King that looked destined for the bottom right until King stuck out her left leg to keep her side in the match.
After that, either side could have won it – the home side through bodies in front of a succession of visitors’ corners, and might have nicked an opening themselves through the pace of lively substitute Dani Dias, but a draw was a fair result.
Credit therefore goes to both sides; roll on Sunday.
What’s next for Ascot?
The Yellawomen entertain Moneyfields again next Sunday in a home league game, the match to be played at Ashford Town (Middx)’s stadium due to The Racecourse being unavailable.
