YELLAWOMEN BOW OUT OF LEAGUE CUP
London City Lionesses beat Ascot 2-0
Ascot United Women’s league cup dreams are over after London City Lionesses Academy beat them 2-0 in the National League Cup Plate last-sixteen on Sunday. The Yellawomen, who were improved after last weekend’s defeat, gifted the visitors a goal in each half and will now focus on getting back to winning ways in the league.
Cup provides test against WSL side’s academy team
The Women’s National League Cup is for sides at steps three and four of the pyramid and invited Academy sides, with the initial stages seeing the winners, runners up and best third-places sides from 22 four-team groups advancing either to the Cup or the lower-ranked Plate knockout phase, depending on their finishing position.
The Yellawomen finished third in their group and therefore qualified for the Plate competition, and having subsequently beaten Chesham United in their first knockout game, this was a regionally-split last-sixteen match-up with the Academy side of Women’s Super League outfit London City Lionesses.
Lionesses edge fairly average first half
Before the game there was a minute’s silence for those who have given their lives for the security of others; lest we forget.
From 3.01pm, predictably, the visitors showed the pace and technical ability expected of them, although it was impressive home winger Jacey Lane who looked most likely to cause damage at the other end – feeding Poppy Dearlove for an early effort that went wide, before cutting inside and seeing a left-footed effort of her own blocked soon afterwards.
But Ascot undid themselves in the 26th minute when defender Bella Cox was dispossessed by Sienna Loom, who tore clear and fired into the top right-hand corner from right of goal.
Cherry Preisner’s flying save then turned away Chloe Kabo’s clever shot from long range, but Ascot had two chances before the break only for Dearlove to drag her shot wide of the target, before turning provider for Beth Lloyd in the 43rd minute; Lloyd spinning and seeing her rising shot tipped over by visiting ‘keeper Sophia Poor after defender Beth Kalliya had totally missed her attempted clearance.
Another gift for Lionesses before hosts rally late-on
Twelve minutes after the restart the visitors were gifted a penalty when a long free kick into the penalty area bounced up – Ellie Luscombe handled – and Tara Walsh slotted the resultant spot-kick into the bottom left-hand corner; the Lionesses number 57 scoring in the 57th minute – just for variety.
Habeeb Gbajabiamila then outpaced half-time substitute Erin Huntley and rattled the outside of the left-hand post as the visitors looked to kill the game completely, before another substitute – Ascot’s Leah Littlechild – should have made it interesting only to fire weakly across goal with the near post unguarded and at her mercy.
Sienna Hegarty came on in Ascot’s fifth and final substitution, although her zing quickly became ping as she hobbled off holding her hamstring with three minutes of normal timing leaving the hosts to play out those and six of overages with a player short.
It was just another one of those days for the home side, but they will go again at Keynsham Town next Sunday.
