RAIDERS NEED PENALTIES TO SEE OFF GOOD READING CITY TEAM

After not playing for 3 weeks Raiders entertained Reading City in the second round of the cup at Victory Field this morning and squeezed into the next round after a penalty shootout.
Despite taking the lead after 5 mins, when Jamie leapt at the far post to head home a Cory corner, the lack of competitive football soon showed and shrugging off the early goal Reading began to pose Raiders some problems, controlling the midfield and playing balls down the sides for their pacey strikers. After 9 mins a free kick, conceded unnecessarily, led to the equaliser, the Reading striker losing his marker far too easily to get on the wicked delivery and glance past Musty. With the game ebbing and flowing Reading scored a second on 15 mins their striker losing his marker again to direct a clever back header over Musty. Raiders were proving vulnerable to Reading counter attacks and only some tremendous keeping from Musty, a flying save to tip the ball over the bar and a one-on-one save were particular highlights. Reading also shot wide on two occasions when it looked easier to score and were unlucky when a midfielder ‘strolled’ through and unleashed a piledriver that cannoned off the bar and bounced down and was cleared! HT 1-2

After some stern words from Dan and Rory at half time Raiders came more into the game and equalised on 43 minutes from a brilliant Kyran free kick that soared over the keeper into the far corner…. game on! Chances came and went at both ends, Cory shooting over from a knockdown while at the other end Musty produced two or three good saves low down aided by some heroic blocking by the defence to keep Reading out. With minutes left to play Keeyan saved the day with a goal line clearance via his knee! Full time 2-2 and according to the rules onto penalties to decide the tie. For those of us who have experienced this situation before (Goaters Road U14) it was going to be a nerve-racking experience!! Suffice to say it all ended well with only one miss compared to Reading’s two and Raiders ran out 4-3 winners.

MOM: Musty, tremendous performance from start to finish and the main reason we’re in the next round and still undefeated this season.

Match score avilable soon
