RAIDERS OVERWHELM PURLEY WITH VIBRANT SECOND HALF DISPLAY

The game kicked off and in the early exchanges it was Purley who had the first effort on goal in the third minute when their forward was allowed a clear sight of goal, forcing James Barclay deputising in goal, to push the ball round the post for a corner. This seemed to stir Raiders into action and a couple of half chances for Euan and Cory came and went in the next few minutes and then after 9 mins Matthew stabbed the ball home from a Cory corner. Raiders had their tails up and continued pushing forward and a great Cory run from midfield presented an opportunity for Jimbo whose shot was diverted for a corner. At this point Purley began to get a toehold in the game and forced their first corner after 13 mins and continued to threaten occasionally with free headers from a corner and a free kick a couple of minutes later. In reply Raiders had chances to score, Euan had a shot saved by the keeper, missed the target when running through on goal, lobbed the ball over the bar from a Purley mistake and a Cory shot was well saved. Raiders now seemed well on top but Purley still posed a threat and had a shot across goal on 33 mins and then out of the blue 2 mins later equalised when some half hearted defending allowed the Purley striker to beat 3 or 4 players in a run from midway in the Raiders half, to plant the ball past James Barclay. The half finished with a persistent run down the right by Freddie who couldn’t quite get his shot right!

After the half time team talk and now playing down the slight slope, Raiders began the half in determined fashion and started to really assert their superiority. Chances began to appear with only a last ditch tackle preventing Cory getting a shot away on 44 mins, Euan shooting over the bar when clean through 2 mins later and Harry having a shot saved by the keeper 2 mins after that. The breakthrough was achieved on 52 mins when James Barclay scored with a text book header from a Cory corner and 5 mins later Euan had a close range volley saved. At the other end Purley were feeding on scraps, their first real chance being a free header from a corner needlessly given away. Shortly after Jamie thought he had scored with a free kick from 25 yards but the referee ordered the kick to be retaken as a Raiders player, standing in front of the Purley defensive line, was less than 1 metre away. The resultant retake was saved by the keeper! With Purley now visibly tiring Raiders continued to create chances, Hari headed over the bar from a corner and on 65 mins Raiders scored a well deserved third goal with Euan stroking the ball into the far corner after some neat interplay on the edge of the penalty area. Three mins later the game was put to bed when Euan scored his second after being put through one on one with the keeper. For their part Purley produced one shot on target after 71 mins which was well saved by Matthew. With the game drawing to a conclusion the Purley keeper made two good saves from Hari and Euan respectively but their was still time for Euan to complete his hat trick on 78 mins, poking home after a corner was deflected into his path.

Overall a great result after last week’s disappointment. Some great play in the second half but some bad old habits resurfacing as well.
