V Wargrave Warriors Cup

A bright day and a soft pitch greeted the Ascot Diamonds for this semi final cup match v Wargrave Warriors (the third first Division side in a row for the junior yellas)

This was never going to be an easy game against a very good Div 1 side but Ascot were up for the challenge.

The match started promptly at 9.00 am and Wargrave immediate came out of the blocks firing as within the 2nd minute, Ascot taking the fight to Wargrave lost the ball to them in the Wargrave half and they quickly sent the ball forward in the midfield where a clever run took the dangerous number 7 past the Ascot left back high in the Ascot half, but instead of trying to run the ball deep towards the box, the Number 7 cleverly hit the ball sweetly close to the turf creating a swirling chip shot that beat out stretched gloves of Hanna for an early goal.

1 NIL to Wargrave who wasted no time in showing the quality that is necessary for a Div 1 side

In the 9th minute Wargrave made a throw in from the right side short to a Wargrave player who turned and hit the ball low and through a sea of yellow and blue socks only for the ball to take a final deflection from the unlucky Pippa Langley past Hanna and into the far post. It was an unexpected stroke of luck for Wargrave who were under real pressure but gleeful to go 2 NIL up in under 10 minutes.

In the next few minutes Ascot refused to be outplayed and again started to create some problems winning the ball back from Wargrave four times in succession all within their half before forcing a corner.

In the 14th minute Hollie Lake delivered a crisp corner which Wargrave failed to clear before Holly McFarlane alert and electric as usual charged through the blue wall to tuck the ball away past the keeper who never saw it.   2-1 and Ascot back in the game.  What a frenetic start but very exciting viewing for the neutral.

This was Holly’s 2nd goal from open play this season and a timely strike at that stage.

Half time came too soon with Ascot into their work and still trailing by 2 goals to 1

The second half kicked off at 9.43 am and in the 38th minute Amira Khan trying to make her presence felt made a neat overhead kick to Gabby Goodall who drove down the line before lacing a shot into the far post to make it 2-2.

What a start to the second half as that was Gabby’s 8th goal of the season and Amira’s 4th assist to level up the business at hand for the Diamonds.

In the 60th minute Wargrave again surged forward and again having played some lovely football to get deep they fired a shot across goal which was aimed for the far post and the unlucky Towani Zyambo valiantly trying to clear the ball invertedly diverted the ball into the net to make it 3-2 to Wargrave.

Yes it was a stroke of good fortune for Wargrave for the second time in the match, and yes it was a rare thing to see two own goals in a match, but most importantly on the run of play, it perhaps was more a result of a steady buildup of pressure by Wargrave than an error by the Ascot defence for that goal.

It was another fine performance by the Diamonds regardless of the result against their third straight Division 1 team

The opposition player of the match for her efforts as usual on the left wing was Alexa Crittenden and coaches player was Gabby Goodall for her magnificent plays up front for the entire match and of course her goal.
