Ascot Sapphires
Ascot Diamonds arrived for a 12 pm local derby kick off against the Ascot Sapphires
In the 4th minute Emma Hughes already imposing her self on the defence stopped another attempted run forward by Sapphires and sent the ball back the other way towards the Sapphires goal where Gabby Goodall intercepted the ball and laid off a pass for Alexa Crittenden also giving the Sapphires problems to collect take one touch turn and belt the ball past the keeper to send Diamonds up 1 nil.
It was a tremendous strike by Alexa and a fine assist for Gabby
In the 15th minute Alexa Crittenden picked up a ball inside the Diamonds half and applied some pace whilst dribbling three Diamonds defenders before letting her lethal left foot do the talking, with a powerful shot across the goal that with the keeper at the near post, she was never going to stop. It was an exciting solo goal by the left wing maestro.
2 NIL to the Diamonds
Half time with Diamonds leading 2 NIL
In the 39th minute, Towani Zyambo challenged for a ball which, as the Sapphires midfielder tried to send the ball into the box it went flush into Towani’s face causing an immediate stoppage. Towani then asked to come off to catch her breath but with the Ascot bench unprepared for the sudden break, play carried on with 10 players and Sapphires quickly threw the ball deep into the Diamonds area where some frantic defending never really cleared the ball until the dangerous Sapphires striker spotted an opening and slotted the ball into the far corner.
Diamonds 2 Sapphires 1
In the 62 minute there would be another twist in what had been some game so far, as Sapphires went back to the long ball but this time the ball bounced favorably for the midfield to send it forward with one touch and burst into box to calmly place the ball past keeper Hannah Richards
2-2 with 8 minutes to play this was a sensational comeback by the Sapphires at this stage.
In 66th minute Diamonds not giving up and still hunting for a winner found a loose ball just inside the Sapphires half and sent it forward with pace for Amira “Haaland” Khan to chase and take advantage a slight hesitation by the Sapphires defenders to send the ball forward and place it past the advancing Sapphires keeper to score what might well be one of the most important goals she has ever scored for the Diamonds and her 11th in 12 games
It was 3 points that took the Diamonds to the top of the league but full credit to the Sapphires for a very tough game, they are also a fine team and a credit to Ascot.
Opposition player of the match was Hannah (no surprise) because the amount of outstanding saves she pulled off during the match was breathtaking. The coaches player of the match also went to Emma another superb performance in leading the defence for the entire match, not only by a work rate that sets a very high bar for the team, but Emma was given a tough job of marking the very dangerous Sapphires striker and she not only kept her in check she also disturbed the effectiveness of the speedy winger with great success.
The Diamonds are now on a 9 game winning streak having not lost a game since November 1st or 113 days ago scoring some 38 goals in this run.
However with 6 games to go and Risborough Rangers only 1 point behind the junior yellas, it is worth noting at this stage complacency is always the enemy of success.
