Ascot United Supervets 5-1 Old Lyonians Supervets

 

The Ascot United Supervets recorded their first ever win on 26 April, defeating a game Old Lyonians side 5-1. Dave Porter’s team dominated the first half, and it was something of a mystery as to how they went into the break only two goals to the good. They also had the better of things in the second half, but when Lyonians pulled one back alarm bells did nonetheless begin to ring. Further goals from the ebullient Dave Freer and a couple from the ever game Zak Dimitrovskinonetheless saw the hosts past the winning post with something to spare.

 

Gaffer Porter was certainly happy with how things went. “We all brought the best versions of ourselves this evening” he mused to Mark Chapman on Five Live after the game “and that despite the fact we missed an absolute shed load of decent chances. Always something to work on and all that……”

 

Ascot certainly got out of the blocks quickly. Phil White, Ben Spence and the gaffer himself got their foot on the ball in the middle, whilst Jez Myhan held the it up admirably up top. With Abbas Hussain ferreting up and down the left like a gazelle on speed it seemed like it was only a matter of time before the hosts took the lead.

 

Sure enough, Myhan (again) bludgeoned his way through the defensive brick wall and the ball squirted out to Dan Hough on the right. He side-footed home and the Yellas were on their way.

 

The ever-smooth Phil White was finding plenty of space and indeed plenty of room to get shots in. And that he did; over, wide and anywhere but in the net. Elegant though White was on the ball, it just wasn’t his day somehow.

 

Others, however, did have their shooting boots on, and Jez Myhan took his season’s tally into double figures when he neatly added the hosts’ second. Matt Newall headed a decent chance wide from a corner, Dimitrovski twisted and turned (and then twisted and turned again) and came close on a number of occasions whilst Dave Porter, ever the midfield general, broke forward and Neil McDonagh, stand in ‘keeper for Lyonians, did mighty well to keep his blockbuster out.

 

The second half, however, had a slightly different feel to it. Ascot looked menacing, but Lyonians also began to work their way back into the game. Indeed, when they pulled it back to 2-1 – via a 25 yard effort that left Kev Patterson with no chance – a feeling of déjà vu descended. Were the Supervets – again – going to throw away a strong position?

 

Erm, no. Not this time. Dave Freer did an excellent man-to-man job on Lyonians’ most creative player, and it was Freer who then made no mistake from a corner to restore Ascot’s two goal lead.

 

Porter rang the changes. Paul Hamblin and Dave Thompson came on up top, Steve Hill slotted in on the right of the back three. And, the chances kept coming. Hamblin tried an ambitious volley from fully 20 yards; it went over the bar, but not by much. Thompson showed decent pace to outrun the centre half, but still the ball wouldn’t go in the onion bag. Even Steve Hill, buccaneering down the right like an aging Cafu, found himself breaking the off side track and crossing for someone to slot in…..somehow that someone wasn’t quite where they needed to be.

 

It subsequently looked for a while like Ascot might have to settle for the 3-1 lead. Dimitrovski, now playing in midfield, had other ideas. He scored one cutting in from left and then beat the off-side trap admirably to jink round the keeper and score Ascot’s fifth goal of the evening. 5-1 it ended.

 

As has been the case on every occasion so far this season, the Supervets’ game was a real pleasure to play in. Plenty of willingness to win, but also an understanding that it was not win at all costs. Lyonians, to the credit, kept coming and indeed completely outclassed Ascot in the bar. 23h00 and there were 15 of them still there. Respect due, that is a more than decent effort.
