Ascot United SVs 1-3 Croxley Green SVs

Ascot United’s Supervets came off second best in a topsy-turvy Saturday evening encounter on 18 April. The Yellas started slowly, but then had an excellent half hour that ultimately led to them drawing level with 40 minutes on the clock. Giving the visitors a gift of a goal at the start of the second half then seemed to blow the hosts off course. Much as Ascot huffed and puffed after that Croxley ultimately ran out deserved winners.

The late arrival of couple of Ascot players wasn’t exactly ideal preparation. Be that as it may, a superb strike from the Croxley left-winger had little to do with much that any of those in yellow were doing. With barely two minutes on the clock Ascot were one down.

Cue a reshuffle from co-Gaffer Porter and cue Ascot coming right back into the game. The Flurry stepover was back on show, as was some decent passing football. Ascot weren’t exactly peppering the Croxley goal with shots, but there was a degree of rhythm in their play.

The goal that their play deserved ultimately took a while to come. But, arrive it did, and that saw Ascot go in level at half time. Mike Tomlinson drifted right, neatly back-heeling a ball to Dan Hough. A deep cross came in and Jon Norris rose like the proverbial salmon to head home. Decent stuff.

That good work, however, was undone almost as soon as the second 45 began. A throw in down the left saw Croxley move the ball into the box before a deflection took it past a helpless Andy Rowe. Far from ideal.

Things then got worse when Croxley stretched their lead (thanks to a decent strike from outside the box). Ascot had half an hour to pull themselves together.

Much as the Yellas tried, they never really managed to do that. Sure, when Jon Norris was bundled over in the box it looked like Ascot could easily have had a penalty, but in terms of making the Croxley keeper work for his money, well, Ascot just didn’t do enough. Indeed, Croxley stepped their game up and took control of proceedings, forcing Rowe into action on a number of occasions.

3-1 it therefore ended. The title remains there to be won, but doing so is now out of Ascot hands. Onwards to host Chelsea on 25 April.
