Ascot United Supervets 3-0 Claygate Royals Strollers

The Supervets’ first home game of the 2026-27 campaign saw them face off with old adversaries Claygate Royals. The Yellas started well and finished even better, easing to an impressive 3-0 win. A scrambled effort from midfield powerhouse Loz Stephenson was sandwiched between two delectable chips from the Supervets’ mercurial skipper, Mike Tomlinson. A job well done.

“As a rule, you don’t expect 6ft5in ‘keepers to get chipped very often” mused Stu Flurry to Five Live’s Mark Chapman in his post-match press conference. “Yet precisely that happened tonight. Four times. All very left-field”.

Flurry wasn’t wrong. Phil White was the first to have a go. He pinged the ball over the ‘keeper from 30 plus yards, only to see it sail narrowly wide.

It was at that point that Tomlinson said ‘hold my beer’. Indeed, the first XI manager looked like he was single-handedly trying to perfect the art of lobbying keepers from 35 yards. The Claygate stopper never seemed to quite understand the script. He would stand rooted between the penalty spot and the edge of his box as Tomlinson kept arcing the ball over the hapless custodian’s head. To be fair to him, the Claygate ‘keeper did get back to scramble one of the efforts away, but two more simply sailed over him and into the net. Let’s just say that there was most definitely an inquest on the Claygate side about all of this afterwards.

Regular attempts to lob the ‘keeper to one side, Ascot soon began fizzing the ball about nicely. The Purdie/White/ Stephenson combination in midfield controlled proceedings, and, aside from a 15 period in the run up to half time, Ascot were pretty imperious.

It did nonetheless take a little while for those goals to come. Dan Hough and Jon Norris somehow contrived to join forces and miss from six yards, but once Tomlinson had notched the first, Ascot relaxed and waited for further goals to arrive.

It was Loz Stephenson who bundled home the second. The goal is unlikely to win any goal of the season contest, but as long as the ball crossed that white line it’s job done.

With Loz Munns now on and leading the line up front Ascot continued to hammer at the Claygate door. Abbas Hussain provided ammunition down the left, Leon Palmer-Wilson sowed things together in the middle while the defensive troika of stand in ‘keeper Rowe, Ferdinand and Hicks were positively imperious.

All in all, a decent night’s work for the SVs. Good stuff.

Squad. Andy Rowe, Dan Hough, Paul Leishman, Chris Ferdinand, Jon Hicks, Loz Stephenson, Chris Purdue, Phil White, Stu Flurry, Jon Norris, Mike Tomlinson (capt), Abbas Hussain, Loz Munns, Mark Read and Leon Palmer-Wilson.
