ASCOT BEATEN 2-1 BY KINGSTONIAN
Well-organised visitors end Ascot’s home record
Ascot United slipped to defeat against a well-drilled Kingstonian side on Tuesday evening. Having trailed 2-0 at the break, the home side battled gamely and cut the deficit late-on, but were ultimately undone as their five-match winning run at home came to an end.
New season fortunes for last season’s play-off semi finalists
The K’s arrived needing to improve their form if they are to repeat their run to the play-offs last season – seven points from six for them coming into the game – whereas a first win on the road at Horndean for Ascot last weekend had lifted them into fourth.
Manager Gavin Smith’s quest to maintain his side’s perfect home record continued, and his starting line-up was almost unchanged from the win three days earlier; Khalid Simmo in for Andrio Brandao.
Calamities cost Ascot
The early stages were a chess-match-affair with both sides playing well and with the visitors enjoying the lion’s share of possession. Home ‘keeper Kie Plumley would save well from Yoan Edoukou’s low shot in the 6th minute after Joe Pratley-Jones had won his aerial battle on the right to tee him up, but it looked like stalemate until the mid-point of the half.
Then, Simmo was outmuscled for Ascot when drifting across the middle, The K’s broke, and Dennis Keimendi opened his body left of goal to side-foot into the bottom right-hand corner; 21 minutes played.
Plumley made an excellent back-pedalling save to keep it at one-nil, but the second goal came soon after, and it was a calamity for Ascot. Following their own corner – the home side lost possession, Kai Allsopp’s sliced backpass sent an already-wide Plumley even wider outside his area, and Darnell Goather-Braithwaite lobbed into an empty from near the left-wing touch line; it was an excellent finish nonetheless.
Luis Le-Paih’s easily-saved shot was Ascot’s only chance, and he and his side had work to do at the break.
Similar second half but Yellamen fight
It was more of the same after the break – for a while – as Stan Flaherty flashed a shot just wide of the left hand post with Plumley rooted to his spot on the hour mark.
Plumley then denied Keimendi, before the home side finally prised open The K’s defence – and it needed to be precision – when Fope Deru’s quick feet teed up Cheick Sylla to check back onto his left and smash into the top left-hand corner from just right of central.
But the grandstand finale never came and it still took Plumley’s intervention to deny Keimendi again later on – and so it ended 2-1 in the visitors favour on a night when the home side were never out of it – but never really in it.

Ascot United head around the M25 to Barnet on Saturday when they FA Trophy trail continues at fellow step-four side Hadley of the Southern League.
