ASCOT CRUISE TO HARTLEY WINTNEY WIN
Three and easy for Yellas in 3-0 triumph
Ascot United delivered a ruthless first-half display to beat play-off chasing Hartley Wintney on Tuesday evening. The Yellamen raced into a three-goal lead before half-time, answering the calls of manager Jamie Tompkins, before managing the game well en-route to victory in a stale second half.
JT looks for more ruthlessness in front of goal
Tompkins had spoken in his pre-match notes about the need to be more clinical in front of goal and continuing to work on sharpening their finishing. And after last month’s heavy defeat in the reverse fixture, he was clear on his determination to turn things around and give the visitors a tougher test this time around.
Super Simmo and A-plus for H as Ascot dominate half
Tompkins duly got exactly what he had asked for, as his side raced into what was an unassailable lead before half time; The Row unable to muster a single shot on target.
Sean Fraser had already served warning with an early flashing header that left visiting ‘keeper Kie Plumley rooted as it sailed wide after eight minutes, but the hosts were ahead in a sweet seventeenth minute move that contained two pieces of brilliance. The first – a raking through ball from Khalid Simmo – invited the run of Anas Igozouln, and with the ball tantalisingly between himself and Plumley, Igozouln won the race and showed quick feet to slot home with the outside of his foot.
Simmo then turned provider again when Ascot doubled their lead in the 32nd minute – threading Harry Grant in at the end of a well-worked move – and Grant showed great strength to hold off the covering defence before opening his body to slot across Plumley and into the bottom left hand corner.
Defender Aaron Burchett’s clumsy challenge on Igozouln barely a minute later then cost the visitors a penalty, and Igozouln drilled it low into the bottom left to make it 3-0.
Taylor Morgan might have added a fourth before the break only to fire wide first-time after Joe Gater and then Simmo had once again had teed him up with a cross, but it remained 3-0 as the sides changed ends.
Visitors create chances in second half but Yellamen retain discipline
The second period was a proverbial non-event.
Chad Goulter’s early rising strike from a tight angle cannoned off the crossbar and over as Ascot sought a fourth, but that was a tempter for more action that ultimately never came.
At the other end, visiting substitute Jack Penton missed a sitter midway through it – planting a header wide when he should have done better – and that might have asked more questions of the hosts with time already running out.
Conor Lynch then missed the target with another, albeit more difficult, airborne volley with ten minutes remaining, and that was it as far as chances went.
Ascot were well worth their win, and it was a welcome clean sheet for Mark Scott and his resolute defence.
