ASCOT BEAT HARROW TO MAINTAIN PUSH
Kickie and Connor lead Yellas to victory
Kickie Dzimba’s first goal for Ascot United together with a stunning solo strike from Connor Holland earnt their side a 2-0 win against Harrow Borough on Saturday. With the three sides just outside the play-offs all failing to win, Jamie Tompkins’ side solidified their grip on a play-off place and are now twelve points above sixth place.
Harvey’s the cream in tight first half
The first half was short on clear cut chances – both sides sharing four decent moments – and the first of them would yield a goal for the hosts. Harvey Harry, a constant threat for Ascot, slalomed his way through a crowded midfield and threaded a perfectly weighted pass for Dzimba to run onto, before the big striker slotted past Daniel Hosier for a ninth minute lead.
But Harry’s slide-rule pass in the 25th minute eclipsed his earlier assist – picking out Anas Igozouln on the right – although his first-time effort was blocked by Hosier.
Boro were disjointed going forwards, although defender Tyrese Osbourne had a good sight of goal in the 32nd minute with a free kick that he curled over the wall only for Mark Scott to tip his effort around a post, although it would probably have gone wide regardless.
The visitors saved their best move of the half until injury time when James Gurteen kick-started a fine move out of defence, picked out Lamin Ceesay down the left, Ceesay in turn fed Osbourne to pick out Kai Hamilton, although Ascot’s Harry Grant picked Hamilton’s pocket just as he shaped to shoot.
Boro huff and puff but lack end product; Holland shows his class
The visitors were desperately lacking in quality in the final third, and their best chance came just two minutes after the restart when Ceesay raced through, was forced wide by Scott, and then flashed a shot agonisingly across goal and wide for a goal-kick.
The Yellamen should have doubled their lead in the 61st minute when Igozouln raced onto Holland’s intelligent pass and cut the ball back for Khalid Simmo at the near post, but he somehow flashed a first time effort wide of the far post from inside the six-yard box.
Tompkins once again used all five substitutes to good effect, although it was Holland who wrapped the game up with four minutes of normal time remaining. His goal had everything; the desire to win back possession near the dug-out, mesmerising quick-feet to bamboozle a defender, and a driving run and low finish across Hosier that bounced off the inside of the left-hand post and rolled along the goal-line before nestling into the inside of the opposite side-netting.
That knocked any remaining stuffing out of Harrow and it was another three points well deserved for Ascot, and another league double for the buoyant hosts.
What’s next for Ascot?
The Yellamen stay home next weekend for the visit of Horndean, whom they beat in the reverse fixture earlier this season.
