ASCOT RUN RIOT AGAINST GUERNSEY
Brendan Matthew scored a brace as Ascot United sailed past Guernsey.
The game started off lively but evenly. Both teams held onto possession comfortably and withheld pressure nicely. The chances were shared between the two sides at the beginning of the half. Harry Grant looked dangerous throughout the early exchanges causing a few problems for the shaky Guernsey defence. Ascot made the deserved breakthrough in the 26th minute when what looked like a Harry Grant cross turned into a thunderbolt which rifled past the helpless Guernsey goalkeeper Christian Povall and nestled into the top corner. From that moment on, the Ascot onslaught began. Sean McCormack, Harvey Killeen and Brendan Matthew terrorised the Guernsey back line. Many chances were created for the Yellamen in the later stages of the first half but to the disappointment of the home crowd, none were converted. On the stroke of half time Ascot deservedly doubled their lead. Brendan Matthew was brought down inside the box by Thomas Dodds and the referee judged that a foul had been committed. Up stepped Ascot’s prolific number nine Matthew; to no-ones surprise, he calmly slotted the penalty into the bottom right hand corner.
It only took Brendan Matthew fourteen minutes into the second half before he put his name on the scoresheet again. Harry Grant lofted a lovely through ball over the top and Brendan composed himself before he expertly slotted his effort past the keeper into the back of the net. Oliver McCoy was brought on relatively late into the encounter making his debut for Ascot. It didn’t take long for McCoy to make his mark on the game either; he found himself one on one with goalkeeper Povall and delicately placed his effort under his body making the score line 4-0 after 89 minutes.
Ascot United FC capped off their first game at home in step four with an emphatic four-nil victory over visitors’ Guernsey. A well-earned three points for the Yellas gives them their first ever win in step four. Ascot’s focus now turns to Monday where they travel to newly promoted side Badshot Lea.
