Report

A tale of two goalkeepers

A good pre-season with minutes under the belt and returning to the dressings room healthy (except for Doug’s calf). A debut for Phil White and both Ascot keepers, Kev and Rich playing a half for both sides. Both keepers had their best moments when they were facing their team mates which was annoying ?

Uxley brought a strong squad and the game was evenly contested. The first ten minutes was a little frantic and it took a while for a little bit of composure to br brought to the game. Toby’s excellent swinging corner was met with a firm header from Simmo and cleared off the line. A significant spat broke out between a couple of the Uxley players which at one level was just funny and at another level was simply pathetic

A few composed moments with the ball travelling quickly across the defence and finding Jamie in space. Same bent his run and Jamie found him with a lovely curled pass. Sam was in on goal and finished firmly in the corner 1-0 after 12 minutes

Uxley played a very high line and Ascot struggled to take advantage of all the available space. Too often the play slowing down or the key pass played too early. The play got a little bogged down and it looked a little flustered with possession being given away too easily. This is what pre-season is for – to get the good habits back and dial in the concentration. Every time Ascot built with accuracy and patience then great chances were created. Kev saved well when Sam broke through for a couple of 1 v 1’s

On 35minutes a great turn by Uxley player provided space for him to rifle a 25 yarder into the top corner. Uxley had earned that and were keeping the ball a little better than Ascot.  1-1 at half time

Uxley dominated possession for the first 15 minutes of the second half and Kev (now in goal for Ascot) made a few more great saves included keeping out some wonderfully in swinging corners as Uxley piled on the pressure

On the hour and nice bif of movement and Stu found some space and slid in a clever ball between the defenders spotting the onrushing Ben who calmly  tucked it away and Ascot were back in the lead. The lead did not last long and a mistake at the back and Uxley equalised.

Ascot made a lot of changes on the hour and started to get some really good and consistent possession and started to play higher up and threaten the Uxley defence. Ascot had a few good chances in the last 10 minutes and it was good to see the team finish so strongly. Bjorn organised the defence and his passing out was crisp, Phil and Simmo got hold of the ball and moved it quickly. There could have been more goals for Ascot but Rich (now in goal for them) made some excellent saves to keep the score at 2-2
