Report:
Ascot Vets 2’s and BoE 2’s delivered a goal fest for fans of FNF with the home side losing 6-7 in a proper nail-biter. Ascot 2’s display could be described as ‘quadrophenic’ with passages of play being positive and assertive followed by frustrating periods of naïvity and hesitancy. Ascot started brightly and created a decent opening within the first minute. BoE responded quickly and a deflected dinked ball found the net, 0-1. Slightly stunned, Ascot responded well, a trade mark ‘Flurry-turn’ 25 yds from the oppo goal and right foot curling shot brought the home side on level terms. 1-1. BoE were nimble in midfield, were good in possession and Ascot were then undone by three quick breaks and found themselves 1-4 down on the half hour. JGav led Ascot’s revival latching onto a good through ball only to be brought down in the box. Stu converted pegging the score back to 2-4 HT.
A changed formation and re-fresh didn’t have the desired effect-this time hesitancy and a misplaced pass at the back let BoE in and Ascot found themselves trailing 2-5 within 2 minutes of the restart. Despite the body blow, Ascot were playing well and began to dominate possession. A foul on Zak brought Ascot’s second pen which Stu converted calmly, 3-5 on 50 minutes. Ascot were now playing their best football of the evening – a pinpoint throw from Hambo to Zak on the hour saw him twist and turn past defenders to finish – 4-5.
Hambo’s superb thunder-strike volley on 68mins brought Ascot’s equalizer and probably marked Ascot’s zenith, 5-5. Pushing for the win, Ascot were again hit on the break, 5-6 on 83 mins. Jez equalized from a goal mouth scramble on 87 mins to level the score, 6-6. On the 89th minute, some tenacious play from the BoE forward saw him break through three tackles and square the ball to a BoE midfielder to regain the lead, 6-7 FT. Some real positives – we didn’t give up but we need to work harder when we are not in possession of the ball and be very mindful of ‘quick breaks’. Well done
