Ascot United 2-5 West Kensington Kings
Ascot United’s V2s went down to a(nother) home defeat on 6 March, coming off second best to West Kensington Kings. Adam Abusweder and Steve Dando scored an (excellent) goal apiece, but that wasn’t enough to stop the visitors’ bandwagon.
As cliches go, “it’s a game of two halves” is up there with the very best of them. But, trite though the saying most definitely is, it certainly reflected the way that this particular encounter went.
Ascot’s midfield troika of Dando, Abusweder and Stephenson started strongly, ensuring that most of the first 45 was played in the WKK half. Karl Small flew down the left, Sam McIntyre regularly got past his full back and once Adam Abusweder pinged the hosts elegantly in front it felt like the game might well be running away from the visitors.
That, alas, didn’t happen. Kings settled into their shape and as the game wore on they got more and more into it. They drew level just before half-time and within 30 seconds of the second half starting they were 2-1 up. Ascot were on the back foot and, in truth, found themselves stuck on it for the rest of the night.
Steve Dando certainly did all he could to turn things around, pinging in a humdinger from outside the box. That made things 3-2. Yet WKK, in echoes of the game last week, simply went up the other end and restored their two goal lead. They got another one before the end, too.
Shout out to both Nick Beard for performing solidly on his seasonal debut, and Tony Everest both for his linesmanship and indeed for fulfilling the Director of Football brief so admirably. Jon Hicks was also very solid on debut.
Be all that as it may, Ascot’s V2s sit fifth in the league. They’ve five games left and need to win two to avoid going down. But, two of those remaining matches are against top of the table Ruislip.
The V2s still have work to do.
