Report:
Ascot Utd Vet’s 2’s inaugural match in the WLVL started with an excellent 9-3 win over Old Tenisonians at the Racecourse Ground. Ascot were asked to start brightly and didn’t disappoint and had all the possession for the first 60 seconds. A misplaced pass from the OT keeper (to be fair his only mistake in the entire game) found Tommo on the edge of the box and he fired home 1-0 (1min and 12 seconds). Ascot were on fire and came close to a second on 10 mins but Phil’s close- range shot flew over the bar. Carl put Ascot 2-0 ahead with a ‘laced’ left foot strike into the top corner following a great cross from Abbas and set by Phil – it was coming and well deserved (14 mins). Ascot continued to dominate possession in the OT half but were undone on the break on 15 mins following an early cross field ball from the left which found their striker who finished well 2-1. From the KO, Ascot worked the ball well into the OT half but again were undone with a quick ball out and deep cross – this time bouncing off the unfortunate Abbas for an OG 2-2 (16mins).
Ascot were playing decent fast paced passing football in the OT half with Tommo’s thunderbolt fizzing past the post (18mins) and Tim hitting the post (26 mins) and great pass from Tommo to Phil in the box saw his shot narrowly miss (28mins). Then, a misplaced pass deep in the OT half saw Ascot underdone again on the break for OT’s third – 2-3 (30mins).
Ascot shifted from 3:5:2 to 4:4:2 and bounced back with a brace from Phil. The first a well struck close range shot at the back post following Abbas’s left field cross 3-3 (33 mins) and the second from Jad’s deep right field cross finding an unmarked Phil on the edge of the box to slot home 4-3. Another great cross from Abbas found Tim who dropped his shoulder and wriggled past a defender and into the box to score under the keeper 5-3. Ascot sustained pressure was rewarded with a second for Tommo on 45 mins 6-3 HT.
The second half saw a more resilient OT particularly from their keeper who was having a storming game. On 62 minutes, Tim broke the deadlock to take Ascot to 7-3. Doug P entered the fray and didn’t disappoint and delivered a pinpoint cross to an unmarked Tommo who lost it the lights and headed over the bar. John G returned from long injury and nearly netted after a strong 30 yard run under pressure but the keeper saved well. Tim got his hat-trick on 78 mins then added another on 85 mins to cap a great performance and take Ascot to 9-3.
Great game and great to win for our first ever game in the league. Well done
