Fundraising game on 28th May in memory of Michael Roberts

Ascot United FC will host a charity game on Saturday 28th May at 1.30pm in memory of Michael Roberts, aka “Sav”, after his passing just over one year ago. Proceeds will be donated to CALM, a leading charity addressing and suppressing suicide in the UK. Read on for an unedited tribute to Sav in the words of those who were closest to him, which includes details of the event and the charity represented.

Mike, Mikey, Sav (because of his Robbie Savage-esque hair), Big Bro, he was so many things to so many people. He was one of those people who had time for anyone, he was friendly, charming, someone you could trust and more than anything else he made you feel like you had known him forever, even if you had only just met him.

Mike was always doing something, from an early age he was adventuring with the Air Cadets, participating in Duke of Edinburgh Award, and playing football. He went to University in Reading, where he met many of his lifelong friends (who will be participating in the event). Mike had a love for speed and adrenaline, qualifying as a Formula IV racing driver, bungee jumping on a year in Australia, and his biggest passion skydiving which he represented Great Britain in as part of the Raykipo team. To add to this, Mike was also a licensed pilot!

Mike’s interest soon became more ground based, Wycliffe Wanderers became a staple part of life, Mike captained the team for a few seasons, he really loved his football and developed many lasting friendships amongst his teammates. Mike always had a lot of time for those around him, he would often ask how you were, or if there was anything he could do for you, he was that type of person and he continued to play for and support the team, as well as his family and friends, right up until he passed away in April 2021.

We have long wanted to have the chance to celebrate Mike’s varied and exciting life, he loved to challenge himself and threw himself headfirst in to so many things. On Saturday 28th May we will be holding a charity football match at Ascot United in celebration of Mike, raising money for Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), a charity who are a leading movement against suicide in the UK who make sure everyone gets the support they need, no matter what. Playing football which was one of the many things that Mike loved, and so we thought what better way to celebrate Mike with his family, friends and former teammates.

The match, between Wycliffe Wanderers and Michael Roberts XI will kick off at 13.30 and there will be lots of other activities throughout the day for those who are coming along to support.
