ASCOT LOOK TO EQUAL RECORD IN MIDWEEK HOLYPORT CLASH

#WeAreAscot.

Ascot United go in search of a club-record equalling 9th consecutive win on Tuesday evening when Holyport visit The Racecourse (7.45pm). Remember it is card only no cash please, and online matchday programme is here.

As far as we know, the only time the Yellamen previously won 9 on the trot in their step 5 era was back in 14/15 when – under Jeff Lamb and Paul McGrotty – they reached that tally between an FA Vase quarter final defeat at St Austell and a draw at Binfield late in the season.

As per his programme notes home manager Jamie Tompkins is, however, mindful of a threat posed by a team scrapping for points in a relegation point, and Holyport will arrive looking to avenge their curtain-raising FA Cup defeat at Ascot earlier this season boosted by a few ex-Yellamen in their ranks; Geoff Kibaki, Usman Lalustani and Steven Deverall having previously racked up a total of 136 appearances between them in yellow and blue.

And as the team sheet shows the match is also an opportunity to sing the little known song “there’s only 2 George Locks”; although in fairness it is highly unlikely to be top of the pops!

Holyport have taken six points from six games heading into the match, but lying second-bottom and with 17 points from 25 games and at risk of being cut adrift with just eight league games remaining after Tuesday’s game, manager Derek Sweetman knows his side must start winning games if they are to avoid an immediate drop back to step 6.

With no other league games on Tuesday, Ascot know that victory would see them jump from 5th to 3rd, leapfrogging Abbey Rangers on goal difference.

On Wednesday, Ascot United Allied U18’s travel to Guildford U18s in the league cup.
