Godalming-ding-dong battle ends with 4-3 win

Ascot United’s title winning under 18 side won a thrilling Grant McClellan league cup semi final tie on Thursday evening to set up the prospect of a league and cup double.

It was hard to keep up with the scoring as – after Will Chaisty’s 9th minute headed goal from a corner gave Ascot the lead, the G’s delivered a quickfire hammer blow with two goals in three minutes midway through the half.

But Lawson Jones would regain parity a minute later before Alex Hall restored Ascot’s lead after a further nine minutes to make it 3-2 in the 37th minute. And if that wasn’t enough, it was quickly 4-2 when George Fairbairn converted after Jones had turned provider five minutes before the end of a frantic first half.

Surprisingly, it looked like the second half would remain goalless until Godalming’s late goal threatened another twist, but 4-3 it remained.
