Ascot United’s second string finished their 2025-26 league game with a game against soon-to-be champions, Ruislip Rangers. For an hour or so Ascot were very much in it. But, once Ruislip got their second things slipped away a bit and Ruislip very much took control of things.
For much of this contest things were pretty even steven. Ascot had more of the ball, Ruislip looked dangerous on the break. Ascot showed some neat passing, Ruislip were more direct. Ruislip went ahead, but Ascot responded positively, missing a penalty and going in at half-time feeling that the 1-0 score was just a bit harsh on them.
Opta stats won’t be providing any data on the game, but if they were and the question was asked as to which players were having the most touches then there’s a fair chance that Jon Keough and particularly Steve Hill (junior) would have been the answers. Both were given plenty of time on the ball, and they spent a fair portion of the first 45 trying to pick passes through the middle, to their full backs or indeed to James Niknejad up front. it wasn’t particularly scintillating, but Ascot were very much in it.
Eventually Ruislip broke the deadlock, but it was not until their second went in – a cracking finish following some sloppy defending from a throw in – that the feel of the game changed.
Ascot tired, more mistakes crept in, and suddenly the Ruislip number eight looked like he was going to score every time he went forward. Did Ascot have chances? Yep, but in truth they became fewer and farther between. In the end, it was the bravery and instincts of Eryk Nawala that prevented the final score from having an even worse look to it.
But, no matter. The V2s will finish fifth (out of nine) and, being frank, that feels about right.
