RAIDERS BATTLE TO GOALESS DRAW AT LEAGUE LEADERS WOODLEY
Raiders travelled to Woodley this morning to play the return fixture against Woodley Wanderers and came away with a battling draw.
Raiders opted to kick up the slight slope in the first half and it was quickly evident that Woodley were up for the challenge, looking to revenge their 3-2 defeat at the Racecourse earlier in the season. The first big chance came to their tall No.9 who collected the ball in midfield and powered into the penalty area where he opted for power but blasted the ball high and wide. At the other end Raiders were struggling to get a clear sight of goal and only had a Cory effort over the bar. Woodley then almost scored when in another attack, the ball was deflected goalwards and with Musty frantically back pedalling it looked like the ball was going to creep in…but Musty got his fingertips to it to push it onto the post where it was cleared. Cory had another effort clear the bar and the keeper saved a free kick that was straight down his throat. HT 0-0
The second half followed a similar pattern but with Raiders seeing more of the ball kicking down the slope. Unfortunately, the final pass usually had too much on it which the keeper dealt with comfortably in most cases. Woodley were relying on breakaways and fashioned the best chance of the half when their winger got into the penalty area on their right and aimed his shot inside the far post. The ball seemed to have beaten Musty, but somehow, he got down and got his fingertips to the ball which was sufficient to push the ball onto the post. Luckily the only person following in was a Raiders defender who cleared the ball to safety. Raiders’ best chance came to Freddie just before the end, when the ball somehow found its way to him and taken by surprise he could only scoop the ball past the post for a goal kick.
A gutsy performance by the boys to deny Woodley who on balance based upon the chances created, probably just about deserved a win.
MOM: Rufus some fearless tackling to keep his opponent at bay. Jack deserves a mention, calm and majestic all through the game at the back and marshalled the back four superbly.
