A great cup run comes to an end

West London Rams beat Ascot 5-1 to go through to the West London Vets league cup final and a great Ascot cup run was brought to an end. The cup run included knocking out three premier league sides but WLR proved too strong for Ascot at Imber Court.

WLR made a fast start and were 1-0 up inside the first three minutes. The quick winger got in behind the Ascot defence and when a clearance opportunity was missed he got to the byline and pulled it back for the forward to finish. The quality of the game was good especially considering the bumpy pitch at Imber Court. WLR were creative in midfield and Wooz was doing a great job organising those in front of him. On 14 minutes, Tommo played the ball into Rob who turned inside two midfielders and was brought down. He got up, smartly placed the ball and with the permission of the ref, smashed a great free kick into the top left corner from 35 yards leaving the WLR keeper stranded. A great response and 1-1.

On 17 minutes, Wooz picked up a hamstring injury and was replaced by Matt who got stuck in straight away. Ascot were under a little bit of pressure with the midfield being drawn back to the defence. Rob had another shot acrobatically tipped over by the WLR keeper and Ascot were finding it hard to create a platform against a very competent and new looking WLR defence. On 22 minutes a short corner resulted in a clipped cross into the box which was powerfully headed into the back of the net for 2-1. More pressure led to a third when Toby made an excellent recovery tackle only for the ball to fortunately fall into the path of a WLR player who then cut inside and fired home. 3-1 a little harsh but WLR had made Ascot work very hard.

In the second hard, Ascot managed to create more opportunities with Lunny providing a platform for Ascot to get forward. There were a few really useful situations that could have brought a goal but sadly didn’t. WLR were hitting Ascot on break now and great work from Matt and JK kept them out on a number of occasions.

A WLR goal in the 60th minute gave them a 4-1 lead and a breakaway on 80 minutes left the final score at 5-1

A very strong WLR first X1 made Ascot work really hard and the impressive thing is that work ethic of the Ascot team continued until the very end of the game.

Hugely disappointing result but as one of our players said; “We joined this league for games that mattered. The disappointment is a reminder that this did”.

A great cup run and some great memories from it.
