ASCOT DAZZLE IN FIVE STAR WIN

Yellamen off mark as they outclass Tadley 5-1

Ascot United outclassed Tadley Calleva on Tuesday evening as they posted a perfect response to their opening day mauling at Southall. Epitomised by Taylor Morgan’s all-action display, The Yellamen were pegged back after taking an early lead, but eventually cruised to victory with three second half goals.

Both sides had lost their opening league games last weekend and it was the home side – in their debut season in the Combined Counties League following a lateral move from the Wessex League – who were on the back foot for most of the game against an Ascot side who created a plethora of chances.

And, it was their first chance after three minutes that led to a goal, although from a Tadley defending perspective it was as just about as bad as it could get. Jonny Denton’s corner was half cleared, then hacked against a defender, then Ian Davies tried to scoop the ball in only go down amid claims for a penalty, although in the ensuing madness Harry Laflin picked up the loose ball on the by-line and cut back before trickling a precise – if weak – effort across Will Butler’s goal and into the far corner.

Laflin should have doubled the lead in the sixth minute only to glance a header wide from Tom Scott’s fine cross after Chris Ellis had picked him out, but the home side levelled in the tenth minute as Ascot created their own defensive horror show when Danny Walden could only turn the ball into his own net when attempting to clear a goal-bound header.

But the rest of the half belonged to Ascot. Sean McCormack shot straight at Butler in the 12th minute, and then Morgan waged his own private battle with a deflected shot in the 13th minute, before striking the angle of post and bar in the 17th and stinging Butler’s palms in the 33rd, but his industry went unrewarded in the first half.

Laflin might earlier have punished awful goalkeeping only for his attempted header to lack the cushion needed to keep the loose ball under the bar after Butler had mis-judged a punch, but the visitors finally struck two minutes before the break. This time, McCormack and Scott doubled up on the right, the latter clipped George Lock in, and after running onto his own brave header he flicked a powerful effort in at the near post after surging in from the touch-line.

The Yellamen then picked up where they left off and a couple of early goals effectively killed off the game. Firstly, Laflin planted a delicious, low header into the bottom right from McCormack’s equally tasty cross, before Morgan got the goal he deserved with a thumping effort from a tight angle – standing only inches in play – that rattled the underside of the crossbar and then the inside of the far post on its way past Butler.

Keaton August, one of four substitutes, then teed up Denton who thumped a simply unstoppable effort home with twenty minutes to go – Butler having no time to react – and satisfyingly for Jamie Tompkins his side shut up shop with Sam Gray thwarting Tadley’s only meaningful effort when he smothered at the feet of Brett Denham.

All in all a good night’s work, but Risborough Rangers and the Emirates FA Cup Preliminary Round are now on Saturday’s radar.
