Report

RAIDERS COME FROM BEHIND TO BEAT PURLEY

The match started in atrocious conditions with heavy rain and a strong gusty wind. Raiders found it heavy going at first and after 5 minutes found themselves 1-0 down when a mishit clearance by Finn went straight to an opposition player who lofted it back over a stranded Finn into the corner of the goal. With Raiders attempting to play their passing game they equalised 5 minutes later, Euan slotting it past the keeper from a Finlay pass. Parity didn’t last long and another Finn miskick allowed Purley to repeat their first goal. From the restart Raiders kept pressing without troubling the keeper unduly, while Purley threatened to score from breakaways on several occasions and only a couple of misses and a Jamie goal line clearance prevented them increasing their lead before Half time.

With the score at 2-1 to Purley and after some strong words from Dan and Rory, the second half started with Purley on top and it was no surprise when they increased their lead with a cross and lobbed finish. Raiders were hanging on at this point and were nearly made to pay when the Purley striker hit the bar from 20 yards. ‘Cometh the hour cometh the man’ and Pablo curled in a beauty from 25 yards to reduce the arrears and this seemed to galvanise Raiders and shortly afterwards Euan equalised from a Hari surging run. Purley refused to buckle and went ahead once more when their player was given the freedom of the penalty area to fire home. This see-saw battle had still got some more to give and Pablo equalised with the goal of the game from 20 yards, cutting across the ball and striking with the outside of his foot to send the ball into the keeper’s top right hand corner….no keeper was saving that!! Raiders were now on top and pressing continuously and 10 minutes from time Jamie slipped the ball home when the keeper fumbled a Pablo free kick. Shortly afterwards Euan made the game safe slotting the ball home.

Final score 6-4 to Raiders, hardworking performances in midfield from Hari and Pablo in particular but everyone played their part, especially in the second half.
