Ascot United Vets first ever double header with two games in one afternoon,  both against Polytechnic. Both sides had good numbers to manage such a schedule. The arrival of the ref was an interesting moment. He threatened to book a couple of players relieving themselves into a nearby bush, then said he didn’t want linesmen and then took a few pot shots at Lee to get himself ready. Perhaps this was all going to be about him.

Ascot proved to be too strong all over the pitch for the Poly in this first game and ran out clear and comfortable winners.

The tone was set in the first minute as Ascot set to play with as much width as high up the field as possible. Sam raced onto a ball behind the full back, cut inside and curled a lovely shot against the far post. Within a couple of minutes, Ascot had taken the lead when Wooz rose the nod in a good inswinging corner delivered by Toby. On 15 minutes it was two as Adam raced clear and created a lot of confusion in the Poly box and Tim smashed the ball into the roof of the net when the keeper palmed a defensive header into his path. A good goal was started with Ferdi winning to strong challenges in the centre of midfield. Poly were sucked in and the ball was fed to Toby wide on the left. He drove forward and clipped a nice ball into the on rushing Adam who finished with ease.

On 29 minutes, Ferdi delayed on the ball for too long and lost it. He responded immediately, recovered possession and played into Ben’s feet inside the box. Ben was too strong for the defender and turned him with ease. The defender chose to pull him down and the ref had no option than to give a pen. Toby finished and it was 4-0 at half time.

The only thing discussed in the half was the zero on the scoresheet and the importance of keeping that to the end of this game. This job was done with some comfort and three more goals.

A bit of pressure was building and another corner was cleared to Tim and he slid in Ben who dropped his shoulder and got a good shot away. The keeper got a firm touch and looked to have made the save but JK was sliding in at the far post to grab his first of the season.

Ascot continued to dominate and played with decent ball speed using the width to continually unbalance the Poly defence. Sam completed the scoring with two really nice goals. The first a mazy dribble with a final cut inside and a slotted finish at the near post. His second and the teams 7th was a joy. The ball played out to Toby in acres of space wide left. His deep cross to the back post was finished with Sam’s bullet header into the roof of the net from just inside the box. Winger to winger to finish it all off.

One of the wonderful things about Sam’s finish was that he had the identical change (a little closer) just a few minutes and his header sailed high over the bar. No thoughts of taking the second opportunity on his chest. He just smashed another header. Good to watch.
