ASCOT CRUISE ON IN VASE

Ascot United keep 2nd clean sheet of the season in a scrappy away win in the FA Vase in the Isle of Wight.

The game started slowly with both sides continuously under hitting passes and slipping.

Before the ten minute mark the referee had already produced two yellow cards. One for either side.

The first given to Newport’s number 11, Joe Butcher for a rash challenge swiping out Sean McCormack and the second given to Usman Lalustani.

Throughout the half, there was the odd chance for either team but Kai Walters came closest; a well struck strike with his right foot narrowly missed the far corner.

After a fairly dull first half, it ended in controversy. Newport’s number 4 Jacob Reynolds flew into a challenge on Kai Walters. The referee went over to the linesman and the half ended with a red card.

A ten-man Newport started the second half full of life creating two early chances, none of which were converted.

Marcus Mealing fought back for the Yellamen with a brilliant effort. He took the ball passed 2 Newport players before firing a low and powerful shot which was saved by Leon Pitman low to his right.

Goal for Ascot! Kai Walters chased down a long ball before cutting it back to the edge of the six yard box where he found Brendan Matthews who composed himself before slotting the ball into the bottom right corner.

In the 67th minute, Newport nearly levelled the game, their number 7 Connor Kelly drove past Usman Lalustani before cutting the ball back, but Sean McCormack arrived to clear the ball.

Newport kept creating chances but couldn’t find the back of the net thanks to some brave defending from Dan Bailey and great goalkeeping from Jamie Ashdown.

Ascot made their first substitution in the 87th minute with George Lock replacing the hard working Kai Walters.

That’s it! The final whistle was blown and Ascot progress to the second round of the FA Vase.

Can Ascot continue this winning form into Tuesdays game against Broadfields United at The Racecourse?
