DOMINANT SECOND HALF DISPLAY SECURES OPENING DAY VICTORY OVER MARLOW
A new look U16 Raiders squad travelled to Farnham Park, Slough this morning to play Marlow Utd.
The game kicked off just as the sun came out and on a hard pitch made ball control difficult. Both teams settled to the job in hand with Raiders shading the first 10 mins in terms of possession and chances, Cory shooting over from an angle and Morgan forcing a save from the keeper. At the other end Marlow blasted a free kick just wide. The deadlock was broken after 11 mins when Euan was slipped through and stroked a left foot shot through the keeper’s legs. Raiders were now clearly on top with Harry and Hari pressing in midfield and half chances came and went, Cory flicking wide from a Rufus long throw but Musty had to be alert to dive and palm away a Marlow free kick. The best chance in this period fell to Jimbo on 35 mins who fastened onto a bouncing loose ball and showing great technique, shot against the post. HT 0-1
The second half continued in the same pattern with Raiders in the ascendancy and Marlow relying on counter attacking but their final ball lacked quality. Morgan shot over after a great turn, Rufus had a long throw cleared off the line and he made it 2-0 on 48 mins stooping to flick home a header from a corner. The game was now ebbing away from Marlow and Morgan made it 3-0 after 56 mins intercepting a back pass and calmly slotting the ball into the far corner. To their credit Marlow didn’t give up and on 58 mins pulled one back when their powerful right winger powered past the Raiders defence, cut into the penalty area and blasted the ball past Musty, 1-3. Raiders didn’t waver and restored their 3-goal cushion on 69 mins when Euan slotted home from a neat Jack pass and despite a Musty miskick from a bouncing through ball that nearly caused a goal, the defence kept Marlow at arm’s length, although Musty took a knock saving bravely at the left winger’s feet just before the final whistle.
A great start to the season with good performances all round particularly some clever and neat combination play on both wings, Kyran and Freddie on the right and Rufus and Jimbo on the left.
