RAIDERS DUMPED OUT OF CUP BY A RAMPANT BURGHFIELD BEARS
Raiders made the long trek to Burghfield Common yesterday in the last 16 round of the cup and ended up on the wrong end of a 5-1 score line.
On a sticky pitch Raiders had the worst possible start conceding 2 goals in the first 10 minutes! Firstly a poorly struck corner from Burghfield arrived chest high at Jamie at our near post and in stooping to head the ball away, only managed to divert the ball past Musty. A few minutes later a slick Burghfield move ripped the defence apart and the striker coolly slotted home. Raiders took a few minutes to gather themselves but gradually got into the match and had several chances, Kyran blasting over, Cory striking from the edge of the area but straight at the keeper and Jack heading wide from a corner. There were also a couple of goal line clearances but equally Burghfield were dangerous on the break with their pace and trickery and struck the bar with a venomous shot that ricocheted down into the 6-yard box where a Burghfield player was unable to turn it into the goal. Half time came with Raiders’ hopeful of getting back into the match and overturning the 2-0 score line.
For the first twenty minutes or so of the second half Raiders were in the ascendancy forcing Burghfield to defend in numbers and rely on counter attacks. Then a crossfield run by Cory ended with Harry sliding the ball home…. game on! Five minutes later though Burghfield added a third to make the game safe and for good measure added two more, profiting from a couple of misplaced passes by Raiders in midfield allowing the Burghfield front three to run at an unprotected defence and score comfortably.
A chastening day for the boys and our poor record in the League Cup goes on. A fully deserved win for Burghfield tarnished somewhat by their blatant time-wasting towards the end. We still have the league to fight for so the second half of the season promises to be exciting with some key games to be played.
